GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – On the final day of the Intermountain Shootout, the BYU’s swim and dive teams finished on top, defeating its opponents Saturday afternoon.

“This is one of the best meets that we have had in years,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “I’m so happy for everyone.”

Fifteen first place wins on the first day of the Intermountain Shootout gave BYU momentum going into the second day of competition.

The women started off the evening with the first win of the two-day invitational. A team of Brynn Sproul, Lily Plaudis, Tiare Coker and Gwen Gustafson secured a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.16.

Sproul took two other wins of her own in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, recording a personal best of 1:52.37 in the freestyle and a 56.00 in the backstroke. Teammates Coker and Jessica LeSueur joined in the top-five of the 200-yard freestyle taking second and fourth, respectively, while Gustafson placed first in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.51.

Also bringing home several wins for the Cougars, was the men’s team. Josue Dominguez touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke at 56.39, while Jared Shaw placed first in the 50-yard freestyle at 20.64. Connor Stirling also claimed a victory in the 50-yard butterfly with a career-best of 22.43.

Several freshmen swimmers earned their first wins as Cougars, including Tyler Edlefsen, Jessica LeSueur, Katie McBratney and Lily Plaudis.

The women closed out the meet securing the top-three spots in the 100-yard individual medley. Mariah Lindsay, McBratney and Charlotte Fie’eiki recorded times of 58.00, 58.44 and 58.82, respectively.

The diving team also came out with a win as Kimble Mahler scored a 285.80 in the men’s 1-meter event for first place.

On Day 2, the men and women quickly showcased their talent by taking first in both the men and women’s 200-yard freestyle relays. The women’s team came away with a time of 1:35.60, while the men finished at 1:21.95.

The BYU women continued to represent their team by putting up the top-three times in two events. Sproul, LeSueur and Anna Despain dominated in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 5:03.49, 5:11.69 and 5:16.27, respectively. In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, McBratney, Plaudis and Fie’eiki swam the top times of 2:04.36, 2:10.20 and 2:10.23, respectively.

Levi Jensen placed high in many events, taking first in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 25.60 and third in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:56.04. Javier Matta also came out strong in the final day, securing two wins for himself in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly with times of 1:52.27 and 49.20, respectively.

Freshmen Cougars Tyler Edlefren, McBratney and Plaudis added more first-place finishes to their records, while several others earned top-five placements for BYU.

The diving team finished the competition with the women’s 1-meter event and the men’s 3-meter event. Mahler and Morgan Cooper finished first and second with scores of 278.00 and 272.40, respectively. For the women, Kennedy Cribbs earned second at 252.50.

The men’s team defeated Air Force, 215 to 177, Colorado Mesa Club, 320 to 41 and Colorado Mesa, 250 to 142.

The women’s team defeated Air Force, 273 to 119, Colorado Mesa Club, 326 to 28 and Colorado Mesa, 293 to 99.

The Cougars have two weeks off before they face Colorado Mesa in a dual meet at the Richards Building Pool on Friday, Oct. 18, at 11:30 a.m. MDT.

The Air Force Academy men’s swimming and diving team concluded action at the 2019 Intermountain Shootout Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, in Grand Junction. The Falcons defeated the host Mavericks in dual action, 264-129, while falling to BYU, 215-177.

On day 1, as a team, after 10 events contested, the Falcons won four of them while placing in the top three in all nine swimming events.

The day started with the 200 medley relay, in which the Falcons took first after the squad of seniors Cole McAnany and Zach Nelson, as well as sophomores Aaron Pang and Matthew Lattin, placed first with a 1:32.07. The next event of the day, the 200 meter, saw freshman Wen Zhang take gold with a 1:41.16, while sophomore Isaac Gwin took bronze with a 1:41.94.

Gwin took first in his signature event, the 100 back, after he breezed to the finish line with a 50.12. The final event win came in the 100 IM, which AF took all three top slots, with Nelson, Pang, and Gwin finishing 1-2-3.

On his own, sophomore Adam Grimm placed second in two events, as he touched in silver in the 400 IM (4:07.26) as well as the 1650 free (16:29.56). Finally, over on the diving board, freshman Brett Jenkins was the top finisher in the 1-meter, as the rookie had a final score of 249.50, good for a sixth place finish.

On day two, the Falcons won three events to up their total wins on the weekend to seven overall. They also finished in the top three in eight of the 11 events in day two.

In the first individual event of the day, sophomore Andrew Limpert took gold in the 200 fly, as he raced to a 1:53.46 in the 200 fly. Right behind him was classmate Aaron Pang, as he took second with a 1:53.78.

Later on in the day, the 200 back was contested, and freshman Gabriel Bartolomei took first with a time of 1:51.62, while McAnany placed right behind with a 1:54.52. The final event win for the Falcons came in the 400 free relay, as the squad of sophomores Gwin, Lattin, Corey Shepard, and Zhang placed first overall.

Finally, on the diving board, Jenkins was once again the top finisher for the Falcons, this time on the 1-meter, as he placed fifth with a 250.80.

Air Force will be back in action Friday, Oct. 18, when they face Wyoming in a dual in Laramie. The meet will get started at 4 p.m. MT.

The Air Force Academy women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the 2019 Intermountain Shootout Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, in Grand Junction. The Falcons defeated the host Colorado Mesa Mavericks, 233-160, while falling to BYU, 273-119.

On Day 1, after 10 events contested, the Falcons finished in the top three in all but two of them.

The day began with the 200 medley relay, as the squad of seniors Heidi Schellin and Esther Min, as well as junior Kylie Stronko and freshman Sefilina Maile, placed second with a time of 1:46.85. Maile then followed that up with a third place finish in the 200 free with a 1:53.67.

In the 400 IM, sophomore Alexandra Armbruster was AF’s top finisher, clocking in third with a 4:39.92. Then it was Maile again, as she took second in the 50 free sprint with a 23.90. In the 100 back, Stronko took second in her signature event as she clocked in with a 57.07.

Over in the 1650 free, freshman Gina Jenkins had a successful debut, as she took second place with a 17:58.03. Finally in the 3-meter dive, freshman Gabby Peltier also made a good debut as she took second place with a final score of 231.80.

On day two, Air Force captured their first two event wins on the weekend, while finishing in the top three in eight of the 11 events.

The day began with back-to-back runner up finishes, as the 200 free relay took second, followed by freshman Luci Lozano taking second in the 200 fly with a 2:10.70. Immediately after, sophomore Evelyn Johnson took second in the 50 breast to continue the streak.

After a couple of events, Maile earned the first event win of the weekend for the Falcons as she took gold in the 100 free with a 51.95. She was not done, however, as she took first once again one race later in the 100 fly with a 56.81.

The final runner-up finish for AF was in the 200 back, as Stronko finished with a 2:04.62. Meanwhile, on the diving board, Peltier was once again the top finisher for AF, this time on the 3-meter, with a third place spot after a final score of 236.70.

The Falcons will return to action next Friday, Oct. 11, when they head to Texas to compete in the Rice Invitational. Action from the campus of Rice will take place all day over two days, Oct. 11-12.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Led by individual wins by junior Torsten Rau in the 500-yard freestyle and senior Brittany Dixon on the 1-meter diving board, the Colorado Mesa University Maverick swimming and diving teams racked up ten top-3 and 26 top-5 finishes on the second day of the Intermountain Shootout, which wrapped up Saturday at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The Mavericks recorded 45 top-5 finishes over the two days of battles against Division I Air Force and BYU as well as the CMU Club squad in the opening meet of the season.

The BYU Cougars swept the series of dual-meet team score results as their women defeated Air Force, 273-119 and CMU 293-99.  Air Force edged CMU 233-160 while the Maverick varsity squad claimed a 333-28 exhibition win over club squad.

On the men’s side, BYU defeated Air Force, 215-177 and CMU by a 250-142 score.  Air Force won a 264-129 decision over the Maverick varsity squad, which in turn defeated the club team 333-36.

Led by a 3-meter diving win by Dixon and three runner-up finishes, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks swimming and diving teams got their season underway with 19 top-5 finishes on the first day of the Intermountain Shootout on Friday at the El Pomar Natatorium.

Dixon, a 4-time all-American, took the 3-meter title with 233.45 points over six dives.

Meanwhile, fellow senior Noah Macomber finished second in the men’s 1-meter with 273.25 points while Chandler Livingston took fourth with 260.80 points.

In the swimming events, the Mavericks were led by freshman Davy Brown, who finished second in the 400-yard individual medley with a clocking of four minutes, 38.17 seconds.  That time, converted to 4:33.17 for altitude ranks the Aspen High School product ninth in program history.

CMU had three women in the top five in that event as Grace Payton was fourth in 4:42.48 while Isabelle Hansson took fifth in 4:43.62.

Meanwhile, sophomore Lane Austin finished second in the men’s 100 backstroke with a time of 50.34 while freshman teammate Alex Bruce also turned in a top-5 finish, taking fifth in 51.96.

Austin also led off the Mavs’ 200 medley relay team, which finished third in 1:32.55.

Elsewhere, the Mavericks had a pair of top-5 finishes in the men’s 200 free. Rau was fourth in 1:42.49 while fellow junior Justin Fell took fifth in 1:43.71.  Rau later finished third in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:37.20 while Logan Ellis finished fifth in 17:05.10.

Senior Samantha White and sophomore Robyn Naze also had third place finishes.  White won her heat of the 100 breaststroke and finished third overall in 1:05.83 while Naze helped cap the evening with a time of 18:01.01 in the 1650 free.

Freshman Lauren White took fourth in the women’s 100 back at 57.86 while sophomore Bella Walters finished fifth in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.95.    Both Lauren and Samantha White, who are unrelated, also teamed with Sarah Fillerup and Candice Rosen for a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:48.88).

Returning all-American Mahmoud Elgayar also finished fifth in the 100 breast with a time of 57.45.

On Saturday, Dixon completed a weekend sweep of the diving events as she registered an NCAA qualifying score of 255.90 points over six dives off the 1-meter board to better ten Division I divers in the 15-woman field.  She had won the 3-meter completion on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rau highlighted the swimming events for CMU taking the 500-yard freestyle in four minutes, 41.80 seconds to win by more than three seconds.

At the end of the session, the CMU women’s 400 free relay squad of Lauren White, Natalie Saul, Noel Scott and Maddie Pressler finished a strong second in 3:34.54.  White also teamed with Samantha White, Bret Congdon and Saul for a third place finish in the 200 free relay (1:37.86), one of eight total third place finishes throughout the day.

The men’s 200 free relay squad of Zander Minano, Noah Vallee, Austin and Elgayar also finished third in 1:24.20.

Pedro Terres Illescas had a pair of third place finishes in the butterfly events.  The senior finished the 200 in 1:55.01 and the 100 in 50.82 seconds. Bruce finished fourth in the 200 at 1:55.79 and was fourth in the 200 back at 1:55.33, just behind Austin, who was third in 1:55.22.

Elgayar also had a third place individual finish as he finished the 50 breaststroke in 26.16 seconds before taking fourth in the 200 with a clocking of 2:07.77.

Brown also followed up her runner-up effort in the 400 IM on Friday evening with two more strong efforts on Saturday.  She finished third in the 200 backstroke at 2:07.64 and fourth in the 200 IM at 2:10.58.  Fillerup was just a single one-hundredth behind in the 200 back (2:07.65) and took fourth.

Macomber finished third on the men’s 1-meter diving with 269.60 points while Tanner Belliston was fourth with 263 points.

Samantha White also had fourth place finishes in both the 50 (31.04) and 200 (2:25.18) breaststroke events.

Matthew Barrett (200 IM, 1:56.95), Lauren White (100 Free, 52.92) also placed fourth while Isabelle Hansson (200 Butterfly, 2:12.99) was CMU’s lone individual fifth place finisher.  The Maverick “B” teams also had fifth place finishes in three of the four relay events.

The Mavericks will be back in action next Saturday on the road (Oct. 12) taking on another Division I foe in the University of Denver Pioneers.
