Two days after their 200 IM showdown, Ryan Lochte and Caeleb Dressel both swam this morning in the prelims of the men’s 400 IM on the 4th day of the 2021 ISCA International Senior Cup. Ryan Lochte posted the top time in the field with a 3:40.42 swim.

His best time in yards is a 3:37.88 from the 2007 US National Championships.

Dressel on the other hand was a 3:44.15 in the event and has no other swims in the short course yards version of the event on record. The third fastest in the field this morning was Grant Sanders with a 3:47.61.

In the women’s event, Lydia Palmer earned the top seed heading into finals with a 4:21.16 while Nicole Frank Rodriguez and Ilektra Lebl set themselves up for a nice battle tonight as they posted times 4:21.20 and 4:21.30, respectively.

2017 and 2019 NCAA Champion in the 100 fly Farida Osman swam the quickest 100 fly in the prelims with a 51.32 to trail her national title-winning time of 50.05 from 2017. Cal grad Osman already has two golds to her name at this meet after winning the 50 fly and 50 free earlier this week.

Sherridon Dressel was a second and a half behind Osman in the prelims with a 52.78 prelim swim, earning herself a second seed into tonight’s final and Flora Molnar followed with a 53.26 for third.

In the women’s 50 backstroke, Celina Marquez was just over her best time in the event of 25.01 with a 25.24 to lead the field. Behind her, a 5-women strong group also got under 26 with Madelyn Moore (25.28), Adaline Bullock (25.47), Yulduz Kuchkarova (25.79), Michal Liberman (25.99), and Justine Murdock (25.99) filled out the top 6.

Kaikea Crews took top seed in the men’s event with a 22.34 as Miles Simon (22.64), Aaron Seymor (22.73), Samuel Parker (22.84), and Sidney Williams (22.89) all also got under 23 seconds.

In the final event of the morning, Reka Gyorgy claimed the top seed in the women’s 200 freestyle with a 1:47.40 while Caeleb Dressel was the fastest man in the event with a 1:34.59.

I attended the meet. Gator swim club pros looked strong and you could tell they were training through the meet. VaTech pros Conger, Schooling, Osman were looking strong as well with Conger having a full beard. Lochte may have been slightly rested, but 400 IM looked great with a slight back off last few yds. Dressel’s 100 free 48.8 LCM and 200 fly shortly after with 29.9 last 50 was impressive!
And Farida Osman 57.8-100 fly. It was a fun meet!

4:15 LCM final after a 3:40 SCY prelim would show he is in very good shape. 4:12 maybe 4:!3 final would mean this event goes on his trials program.

It’s already on his trials program of everything that he says he might swim, but he always swims fewer events than his max.

The setup is yards in the morning, meters in the evening.

This is a big deal. I wonder if this even surprised him. Honestly the 4IM is deep but it doesn’t have any stars blocking him from sneaking in. Call me crazy but I wonder if he adds it to the schedule. 3:40 untapered is as good as ANYONE and Lochte is a notoriously bad untapered swimmer. Maybe his time tonight in LCM will convey that his ability in 4IM is dependent on underwaters at this age, but tbh I feel like he has big shot at making the team in it.

The great thing about this is, there’s absolutely no faking your way through a 400IM. If he’s this close to his best time, it means he’s in shape. (We had to take all that stuff about how great he was training with a grain of salt until now.) Granted, his 4:05 gold medal-winning effort from London was probably the equivalent of a 3:33 or so, but that was a shaved and fully tapered swim on the first day of the Olympics. And Lochte doesn’t have to be at his all time best to make the team.

4:05.18 LCM has got to be faster than 3:33 SCY, right? The LCM World Record is 4:03.84 by Michael Phelps in 2008. The SCY American Record is 3:33.42 by Chase Kalisz in 2017.

Didn’t Kalisz also go like 4:05.9 in 2017? 33/32.high seems right to me. Tho if phelps swam it scy that record would be around 330 I bet

I’ve said this before, met him once. Super nice guy. I can’t help but root for him. yes he did some bad stuff in Rio, but I’ve always wanted him to come back strong.

I’m just glad people didn’t jump straight into saying ‘Dressel should do the 4IM at trials he’s gonna smoke everybody’

I mean, he’s been 49 fly and 46 free….I bet he can split faster than a 58 back and 1:10 breast to break the world record /s

Worth pointing out the 15-16 results aren’t being reported – many of the top times for girls have been faster than the open results – for example, Leah Hayes with a 4:17.59 in the 400 IM. She’s been having a good meet, as well as 14 year old Erika Pelaez.
