2016 Rio Olympic team members Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Lochte have both scratched out of the men’s 100 meter butterfly semifinals for tonight.
The Bolles School Sharks’ Dressel was the seventh seed after prelims this morning, clocking 52.22. Lochte, who swims for SwimMAC, finished ninth this morning with 52.66.
With those two scratches, the University of Michigan’s rising junior Aaron Whitaker (53.31) and Duke’s Michael Miller (53.32) both move up into the semifinals.
Both Dressel and Lochte’s decisions to scratch are so they can focus on their more-primary events for the night. For Dressel, that event is the 50 free semifinal, while Lochte has the 200 IM final. The 200 IM race will be this week’s highly-anticipated showdown between Lochte and Michael Phelps.
Dressel comes into the 50 freestyle semifinals tonight seeded first with his 21.76 from this morning. Lochte finished first in the semifinals of the 200 IM yesterday. His seed time for tonight is 1:56.71.
This makes tonight very interesting for Phelps. He needs to secure a spot for the 100FL finals, but Lochte is going to be fresh for the 200IM. Given how fast the 100FL prelim times were I wonder if MP just does what is needed to get to the final without caring about getting the middle lane and then throws the hammer down in the 200IM.
Most likely, but I hope he doesn’t do what Missy did in 100 free semis and miss the final.
i don’t think missy held back too much in the semis I think she just wasn’t fast enough to move on
Correct. her time is about right considering her 200 was a 1:56.18, and her pb is 1:54.81 (1.37 difference).
Obviously it’d be great if MP rocks the 100FL semis and then rocks the 200IM, but if that’s not going to happen I’d almost rather have him just make the 100FL finals, rock the 200IM, and then rock the 100FL finals tomorrow.
He can coast in the 200im.
Nolan might be a 1:56 mid, so he can’t coast that much.
If you can call a body that’s had two 400 IMs, 3 rounds of 200 free, an all out 100 free, and an 85% 100 fly “fresh.”
