Caeleb Dressel Annihilates American Record with 40.00 100 Free

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Florida’s Caeleb Dressel is now a 3-time individual 2017 NCAA Champion. On the final night of competition, Dressel shot off the blocks en route to the fastest performance ever, flipping in 19.01 and touching in a final time of 40.00 to dominate a loaded field that included Olympic relay teammates Ryan Held and Blake Pieroni. That took down his former American Record of 40.46 from last season’s NCAAs.

Dressel now owns 5 of the 10 fastest performances ever in the event. Coming in 2nd was Missouri’s Michael Chadwick, who is now the 4th fastest performer ever at 40.95. Held rounded out the top 3, moving up to 7th on the all-time top performers list in 41.21.

As much as I wanted him to break 40, it’ll make for an exciting lead up over the next year. Can he break it…?! The articles and hype surrounding it will be big, which is more exciting than wondering if he can go from 39.9 to 37.7.

Incredible race by an amazing swimmer. I remember when my 200 free relay was out that fast at the 100!

Welp, at least that gives him something to shoot for next season.

Fun to be there to see it happen. Amazing is an understatement. He’ll get that time lowered.

Does anyone have the link to the comment section that was BLASTING Caleb for making such a POOR decision to swim at Florida??? Would love to go back and read those comments from the geniuses who proclaimed gloom and doom for him!

Great job Caleb! And congrats to the Florida coaching staff for taking a GREAT swimmer in HS and making him even faster!!!

Say what you want about Rowdy as a commentator, but he nailed this call. Said Dressel needed to go out in 19 flat to break 40. He split 19.01 in the opening 50, and missed the 39’s by a hundredth.

We couldn’t have anyone better than Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines on the broadcast. His enthusiasm is intoxicating for our sport! The best!!!
