Florida’s Caeleb Dressel did it one more time, breaking the 40-second barrier for the first time in history with a 39.90 to win his last individual title of a storied NCAA career. Dressel was out in 18.9 to his feet and returned in 20.9 to finish that 39-second swim.
NC State had a killer showing behind Dressel’s spectacle. Ryan Held was 41.08, dropping a hundredth from this morning’s relay split to move up and tie Nathan Adrian for #5 all-time in the event. Interestingly enough, Adrian was on hand to present the medals in this race.
Held’s teammate Justin Ress was third in 41.49 and will be the fastest returner next year. Indiana’s Blake Pieroni wound up fourth in 41.51, just touching out the last of the Wolfpack trio, Jacob Molacek, who was 41.55.
Texas’s two swimmers each moved up a spot, with Townley Haas taking 6th and Tate Jackson 7th. They’re looking like the top threat to NC State in tonight’s 400 free relay.
USC’s Santo Condorelli was 8th.
In the B final, Auburn’s Zach Apple blasted a 41.36 to win by a wide margin with ‘Bama’s Robert Howard 10th.
On another note, can’t wait for his 200IM LCM!
39.90 still doesn’t look happy? Are u serious Dressel? Getting more and more cocky..
Yet your idol Joseph Schooling isn’t cocky? Dressel is the most humble swimmer you can find.
You are quite honestly the worst person on this site. Enjoy seeing Joe get railed every time he and Dressel swim against each other.
worst? are u sure. You are not any better too. You are the master of personal attacks. Losing to Dressel isn’t shameful. Fyi.
Maybe you’ll notice it’s only when you say something comically biased an inflammatory. Like mocking a guy like dressel whos absolutely exhausted for not celebrating a race. Have you noticed it’s only you I ever call out?
“Cocky”
“I hope shields is here to see his record go down”
“I went 50.7 in practice”
“I’m going to break Phelps world record”
“I’ll be the first under 43”
Aaaaand falls on his face all four times.
PVDH for the win.
Huh? You couldn’t wait for a chance to put down Dressel eh?
When I’m tired, I curl up in my bed and watch netflix. When Caleb Dressel is tired, he breaks an NCAA, American, and US Open Record. Nbd
Oh my… His focus this year was long course and he just did all that in short course?! I can’t wait to see the freestyle world records get broken at pan-pacs, maybe even at trials.. just wow
I’m the full interview he says he’s been doing a long course focus and been training with the medley group all year. He only transitioned to sprint free during taper for NCAAs.
Worked out great. Shows that allround traning is the best
Caleb Dressel is a good swimmer.
Oh, I thought he sucked.
You are not worthy.
Oh, I thought he was a terrible swimmer.
Oh, I’m bad at sarcasm.
Yes, you are.
I am not worthy.
That’s a surprise. His triple (50 free gold (21.15), 100 fly gold (49.86), 47.22 100 free lead off) in Budapest was the most impressive single day performance I’ve ever seen. I would think this schedule would be easier? I’m not sure though, maybe someone who knows more about swimming can answer that.
Well he had to swim 50 free 4 times in 1 day, 100 fly 2 times in one day, 100 free 4 times in one day. Ow.
Plus he swam in all prelims and finals in all 4 relays he was in.
Not plus. I added that in.
He did 50 free four times 100 free once 100 breast, then 2 100 flys and 2 fifties again, then 4 100s again
He didn’t have to swim in the morning that day. At NCAAs he has to swim all out in the mornings sonflorida makes the relay finals. And then all out again at night. He said in an interview that worlds was much easier than NCAAs.
This was the last of 3 days that were full of swimming for Baeleb. At NCAAs he’s got 4-6 swims per day for 3 days straight, whereas in Budapest he had a much more spread out schedule. Doing one triple is easier than doing triple twice and then two doubles twice.
I’ve swam ncaa’s, 3rd day is exhausting. The emotional/physical output and ncaa’s is like no other meet. Swimming record times almost every single swim…some have said that they were disappointed that he didn’t go a 38….ummmm what? Remarkable young man.
Worlds is also twice as long of a meet giving more time to recover physically and mentally even with the semi swims added in. With the semis added in I think he only swam a few hundred more than the total here here (though someone should correct me if I’m wrong), and having 4 extra days to swim 300ish extra is a lot of extra rest time worked on. Plus the team aspect of NCAAs is tiring
That meet was also spread out to a week while NCAA’s was only 3 days (for him).
