At the Junior World Championships, where he was crowned the world’s fastest 18 & under male (give or take), Caeleb Dressel told our Colin Blair that during his senior year of high school, he really wanted to explore other events outside of his primary 50, 100, and 200 freestyles.
In his first meet for Clay High School (Dressel swims for the Bolles club team, but attends a public high school), Dressel swam a 47.3 in the 100 yard fly. Depending on which events he chooses to swim at the Florida State Championship meet, the possibilities are unbelievable. Note that his Bolles club, but not high school, teammate Joe Schooling holds the National High School Record in the 100 yard fly with a 46.50.
With the Florida High School State Championship meet being among the first of the major state championships, in mid-November, Dressel has a shot at several National High School Records. That includes David Nolan’s public/overall record in the 100 yard free (42.34), Vlad Morozov’s public/overall high school record in the 50 free (19.43); Connor Black’s public high school record in the 100 yard fly (46.71), Schooling’s overall high school record in the 100 yard fly (46.50), and maybe even Tom Shields’ public and overall high school records in the 200 yard free (1:33.83).
His best times are currently 19.82, 43.29, and 1:35.51 in the 50-200 yard freestyles, plus that 47.3 in the 100 yard fly.
Dressel is the defending Florida 2A High School Champion in the 100 yard free (44.10) and 100 yard back (50.08).
We’re trying to track down full results from the meet, but know that Dressel also went a 48 in his 100 yard back.
Wow! No vacations for him after a long summer of competition?
He’s really impressive.
Someone give that kid some down time. Reading about all this racing he’s doing makes me feel tired.
A 45-second 100 fly is quite likely.
Nolan, Murphy, and Conger have all swum up 45-low 100 backstrokes. Usually 100 butterflys are as fast or a little faster than 100 backstrokes, so it’s about time someone busted out a 45 in high school. Ridiculous, but very possible.

He’s already tapered right now from World’s so he’s going to put up some fast times. I think Shield’s 200 free record is a hurdle too far. The record board at Shield’s Edison HS is actually nicer than their purgatory of a pool there.
He was a 1:06 long course 100 breastroker as a 14 year old!
PVK is not out of the realm on those guesses. After seeing that video, noone should be stunned to see an 18.8 – 18.9…even the most jaded observers from that comment board can’t make a showing that wasn’t a 19 low. It is a bit much to not believe what we are seeing. And what we are seeing is possibly the best and definitely the most versatile high school male ever. Don’t forget Mark Spitz junior year in HS … American records 100 fly, 200 IM, national HS records 200/400 free, anchored 400free relay in time equivalent to teammate Bob Jamison’s national 100 free record. Then, the week after HS championship, he beat Mitch Ivey in 100 back.
I stand corrected! I also heard a tale about Spitz racing and beating the Olympic team backstrokers at Training Camp for the 1972 Games. One of the great backstrokers of all time…who never swam it in international competition. He broke the American Record at a high school dual meet as a HS junior, correct?
His 2 American records were 100 fly & 200IM. Backstroke was not American record, but close. Not taking anything away from today’s kids … There are so many who are so good.

WOW. He could go 46.2 at least I think. And 18.9/42.0/1:33.9 in the freestyles. Amazing. Not sure about the 200 im but I would imagine he could pull out at least a 1:44.3

I bet he could go 1:44.2 in the IM, considering his weakest stroke is breast and he went 57 as a 15 year old.
