Caeleb Dressel swam to a win on night 2 of the Atlanta Classic touching in a 48.30 in the men’s 100 freestyle. That was his fastest swim in the event since taking eight months away from the sport.
Dressel withdrew in the middle of the 2022 World Championships due to medical reasons and did not compete in the 100 butterfly there. He then spent eight months away from the sport before returning to the pool. After almost a year away from competition, Dressel returned in May 2023, just over a month before the US Summer Nationals.
After swimming a 49.42 in prelims at Summer Nationals in the 100 free to finish 19th, he was faster with a 48.85 in the event at the US Open in December. He then swam a 48.57 at the Pro Series stop in Westmont in March and was faster in San Antonio in April with a 48.40. Now, he swam even faster with a 48.30.
Dressel’s swim from tonight makes him the 5th fastest American in the event this season. His best time in the event stands at a 46.96 from the 2019 World Championships which still stands as the American Record.
Top US Men 100 Free 2023-2024 Season
- Chris Guiliano, 47.49 ACC Time Trials
- Hunter Armstrong, 47.83 2024 Worlds
- Matt King, 48.02 2024 Worlds
- Jack Alexy, 48.24 Triton Invite
- Caeleb Dressel, 48.30 Atlanta Classic
Dressel also has progressed in the 100 butterfly going from a 51.66 at 2023 Summer Nationals to a 50.84 in San Antonio. His improvement bodes well for US Olympic Trials that begin on June 15th.
too slow. Pan is way better
For perspective, at this same meet in 2021 Dressel was 48.0 in prelims and 48.67 in finals. He went on to swim a 47.39 at US Trails a month later and then 47.02 to win gold at the Olympics.
Dressel is in a great place and will be just fine come Paris! He is back IMO!
48.00 was a time trail the morning after an evening 48.67 swim to emulate the prelims to morning semifinals swim schedule in Tokyo
I’ll give him 46.8 at trials (at the flags)
I’ll give him 47.8 at trials
FRAUD DRESSEL is WASHED and is NEVER returning to sub 48 form lol.
It sounds like you need a hug, buddy. I’m here for ya.
You seem delightful.
right? This guy must be a blast at parties.
Not as washed as the Chinese fraud Pan Zhanle though
Why fraud?
Fraud and washed = 3 individual Olympic golds.
daggers!
you are now banished from the Kingdom of Gondor.
Impressive considering he had no one to push him and clearly working on his back second 50.
I won’t be surprised to see him get in the 46 range come Olympics.
Awful take
I would
47.6 nothing more
Exactly 1.5 seconds back from Chinese state sponsored doping
“Contaminated kitchen”
Have people forgotten Dressel is a taper swimmer? I don’t think he’s ever swam under 48 in-season. Not counting partial taper meets.
Your point is valid – 48.3 is extremely good for him outside of championship meets. But he did go 47.8 or 47.9 in June 2019 pre champs.
“Not counting partial taper meets”
He swam a 47 at this exact meet, which is almost on the exact same date, in 2019. Are you not counting this as a partial taper but you’re counting the same meet previously as a partial taper?
I’m pretty sure that year didn’t have a nationals, so AC was about as much of a focus meet as you could get
There were no national trials that year because the team for the world championships was already selected. It was the last meet before the championship so I’m guessing that’s why he was partially tapered then.
SMOC in 2019 in June was the last meet before worlds. Atlanta Classic is in May
Ever swum
