The NCAA Championships starts tomorrow, and there has been one more change to the psych sheets since we last reported.
The California men’s team qualified exactly 18 swimmers to the meet, which left no room for divers. After the conclusion of the diving zones meets a few weeks ago, they decided to scratch freshman Frederick Klein, who was entered in the 1650 freestyle, in order to make room for the divers.
Junior Joshua Thai and sophomore Geoffrey Vavitsas are the two Cal divers entered in the meet. Both will be competing in the 3-meter and Platform diving events, where they scored 21 points combined last year.
Samuel Campbell, from Ohio State University was the first swimming alternate once Texas completed their scratches earlier in the month, due to his 30th rank in the 1650 freestyle at 14:49.25. Since he earned an invite in the 1650, he is also eligible to swim the 500 freestyle, where he comes in as the 51st seed, and the 400 IM, where he is the 38th seed.
Klein had been entered in the same three events, coming in as the 56th seed in the 500, the 40th seed in the 400 IM, and the 28th seed in the 1650 at 14:48.74. It is just a coincidence that he was invited in the 1650 and the first alternate was awaiting an invite in the event. The swimmer scratched and the swimmer added do not need to have any correlation in events and Campbell still would have been in had he swam the 100 breaststroke.
The psych sheets and meet information available on the USA Swimming page have not been updated to reflect this change, but you can find the new psych sheet on the NCAA.org page, or here.
What is the rule as to ‘relay-only’ entrants?
Do I understand correctly that if they are entered in that category they MUST swim the relay they are designated to?
Is there anywhere with a listing of all ‘relay-only’ entrants?
That sucks for Freddy Klein. NCAA should really consider lifting the roster limit for the meet. It is such a huge accomplishment to make it, and with team roster limits coming in, they should let everyone that qualifies swim. It’s not like TX will be able to show up with 30 guys, the limit only affects a handful of guys every year, most of whom would be really unlikely to score, or score significant points. At a minimum they should let them come swim exhibition.
when you join Cal or Texas or Florida, this is a real possibility.
What sucks though is that Chai is out again, despite a great season.
And what also sucks is how less than 30 swimmers are allowed in each event even though the times are significantly better than last year. E.g., for the mile swimmers with 14:54 would cut it.
still better than the old days when relays were picked after A-cuts but before B-cuts and only 20-22 swimmers were invited in each event.
Personally I wish it was more people invited and I also wish there was a C-final at the meet (looking at Women’s D1 and see how close it was between 9-24 in many/most events.
I also remember reading that swimming has more athletes invited than what is in the NCAA guidelines.
I also remember reading that someone suggested that the season to be changed so that the National Championships would not fall during March Madness and I am agreeing more and more with this.
