RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men’s and women’s swim and dive teams pulled double-duty on Saturday as a handful of swimmers took part in the MPSF Open Water Championships in Long Beach and hosted Pomona-Pitzer and CalTech at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

MPSF OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sophomore distance swimmer Mark Kovacsics earned CBU the first-ever MPSF Open Water individual championships, winning in a time of 54:58. The CBU men’s squad took second in the team event, finishing behind Pac-12 powerhouse Utah. Gabriela Robles was the top finisher to the Lancer women, crossing the line in 1:02:07, leading the women to a seventh-place finish out of 11 teams.

Mark’s victory automatically qualifies him for the 5K USA Swimming Open Water National Championship as well as the CSCAA National Championship in December.

SWIMMING

The men’s and women’s teams comfortably won their afternoon swim meet against Pomona-Pitzer and CalTech, even with those distance swimmers getting the afternoon off after a draining Open Water swim.

The Lancers won 14 of the 26 events between the lane lines. CBU was paced by Andrew TehOlivia Walton, and Faith Brazil, who all posted multiple race wins on Saturday afternoon.

DIVING

CBU had another record-breaking day on the boards, as freshman Mario De Valle broke the program records at both 1-and-3 meters. His scores of 410.80 and 418.55 comfortably set the new standard in the program, moving sophomore Gael Jiminez to second place in both categories. Those scores also easily qualify De Valle for NCAA Zones in early March to earn his way to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia, in late March.

Jacob Penman scored 303.50 on the 1-meter, and John Angelovic recorded 321.70 on the 3-meter, securing trips to Washington for NCAA Zones.

Audrey Thordarson-Wehner got the win in the 1-meter event for the women but qualified for Zones at 1 & 3 on Saturday. Natalia Bedolla took the top spot on the 3-meter board, setting a new program record with 331.30 points and punching her ticket to Zones. Finally, Audrey Easter posted a score of 270.85 on the 1-meter board today, earning her first ticket to NCAA Zones as well.
