#3 Cal had little trouble with in-state rivals #14 USC with Missy Franklin only swimming two individual events and no relays. The defending Olympic champion in the 200 backstroke was edged by teammate Elizabeth Pelton, 1:54.62 to 1:54.72, in that event. In the 200 free, however, it was Franklin who came out way on top, touching in 1:45.67, exactly two seconds ahead of Pelton.
These weren’t the only races that the Golden Bears dominated. Freshman distance star Cierra Runge picked up double-wins in the 500 (4:47.83) and 1000 free (9:51.36), Farida Osman won the sprint free events, Pelton added a win in the 200 IM, and Marina Garcia took both breaststroke events. Osman hit a dual meet best in her 50 free win, where she finished with a time of 22.57. “Just watching everyone swim well made me want to go faster,” she said after the meet, adding, “I wanted to help inspire the team by swimming fast.” The Egyptian swimmer will be one to watch in the future as Cal works to bolster their sprint group. Garcia, in the breaststrokes, also looked very good, touching in 1:02.63 in the 100 and 2:14.73, much more impressive than the last time she swam, last weekend against Arizona and Arizona State.
Rachel Bootsma took the 100 backstroke (53.76), coming back on Trojan freshman Hannah Weiss (54.04) who had led the race at the halfway point. USC came away with two swimming wins, in the butterfly events, as Kendyl Stewart spoiled what could have been a third win for Osman, taking the 100 fly in 53.23 to Osman’s 53.52. Jasmine Tosky edged Celina Li in the 200 fly, 1:58.28 to 1:58.53, in Li’s first meet after being held out of Cal’s last meet against Arizona for “violating team rules.”
The Trojans did find some points in diving, as senior Haley Ishimatsu won both 1 meter and 3 meter events, leading a 1-2-3 sweep on the 3 meter.
The Golden Bears put together winning relays on both ends of the meet, in the 400 medley and 400 free relays, to finish with a 197.5-102.5 victory over the Trojans.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Bears host the UCLA Bruins tomorrow, while the Trojans travel to face a tough #2 ranked Stanford squad tomorrow. Both meets are slated to begin at noon PT.

or 200 IM/200 free/100 free?

I’d prefer the first option. Then the second. And the third as a last resort.
If that’s the first option, Missy and Liz would swim 3 times against each other.
No way she does the 200 back and 100 free on the same day. If she does the 100 free she’ll have her hands full with Simone Manuel and Lia Neal and she’ll need to be fresh for it.
I think she does 200 IM/200 free/200 back. She’ll battle Pelton for titles in the 200 IM and 200 back and easily win the 200 free, which will maximize the points she scores, and she won’t be swimming races right after relays (i.e., the 200 free relay and 500 free). Also it would be a shame to not see her swim backstroke in her final NCAA’s.

Missy Franklin dominant in the 200 free as always but it makes me feel weird to see her so often beaten in the 200 back, her baby race. She’s almost always out-touched by Miss Pelton who has most of the times a faster last 25. It never happened before. Before what? I don’t know. But it never happened.
Marina Garcia “much more impressive than the last time she swam”. Well. I’d rather say less bad. Still not better from Maija Roses and especially Kristen Vredeveld.
