Cameron Craig Returns to NCAA Swimming, Joins Ohio State Roster

After leaving Arizona State University, Michigan native Cameron Craig has announced today that he’ll continue his NCAA career with Ohio State University.

Craig, one of the fastest 200 yard freestylers in history, competed with the Sun Devils for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. As a freshman, he raced to a fifth-place finish in the 200 free at NCAAs and added a 13th place finish in that same event as a sophomore in 2018. He swam on all three free relays and served as the 400 medley relay anchor at NCAAs both seasons.

TOP TIMES

  • 50y free – 19.50
  • 100y free – 41.95
  • 200y free – 1:31.71
  • 100y back – 47.33
  • 100y fly – 47.18
  • 200y IM – 1:42.75

In October of 2018, ASU confirmed with SwimSwam that Craig would be sitting out the fall semester after he did not compete at all last summer. In January of this year, ASU confirmed that Craig was no longer part of the team. After a 14-month hiatus from racing, Craig returned to the pool this summer, training with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics. He swam a few meets this summer, hitting lifetime bests in the 50 fly (24.79) and 100 fly (52.46) and also adding times of 23.35 in the 50 free and 49.75 in the 100 free.

This is a big pickup for the Buckeyes, who finished ninth at the 2019 NCAA Championships. They had two men go 1:32 in the 200 free last year: current senior Drew Loy and current junior Paul Delakis. Delakis placed fifth in the individual event.

Craig has split sub-19 and sub-42 on relays, and should he be on form in yards when he joins the OSU roster, he’d be an upgrade on any relay. SwimSwam has reached out to Craig to confirm when he’ll be joining the roster, but it would appear he still has two years of eligibility left and would feasibly be able to start competing with the Buckeyes as soon as he wants to with OSU and ASU being in different conferences.

Good athlete, with lots of potential.
But still a kid, needs to mature…m.bottom would digest him easier.

He had problems with grades at ASU, Michigan wouldn’t be a smart choice

Can’t imagine there are many good choices if you have trouble with grades at ASU

Having gone to UM for additional credit hours, I can testify to the overrated academic reputation

Never pay undergrad tuition there. Grad schools fabulous

That applies to pretty much every research university. Do not go there for an underraduate degree, go to a liberal arts college, then go to a research university for the graduate school (if you can afford all of that).

Loy/Craig/Delakis/Gaziev is a pretty nasty 800 free relay!

Well, OK. Abysinghe or Jonah Cooper then. Don’t lose too much there.

And 4 free relay. Their relay points, divers, and those four guys could put them in a spot where they’re looking to contend the Big 10 and a top 6 finish at NCAA.

Go Cameron!

In retrospect, what would OSU’s #9 recruiting class be re-ranked at, if the rankings included transfer Cameron Craig? Top 4?
