University of Tennessee-commit Camille Spink, a junior, won the 200 IM in 1:58.87 and the 100 back in 53.53. Her times were off of her best (1:58.84/52.76), set in December at the NCAP Invitational, but not by much. Her best times in the events rank 16th and 10th in the 17-18 age group this season, according to the SWIMS database. Spink won the 50 free and 100 free at last year’s 6A state championships, swimming a 22.55 in the 50 and a 48.93 in the 100.

Senior Landon Gentry, who is committed to Virginia Tech and swims club at Nations Capital (along with Spink), swam a high school season best time in the 100 fly, finishing in 48.59. Gentry’s best 100 fly this season was at the NCAP Invitational in December, where he swam a 46.92. He ranks 13th in the 17-18 age group in the event this season.

Colgan High School freshman Matt Jensen cracked the top 20 in the 13-14 age group in his 100 free, finishing in 47.47. His time ranks 20th this season in his age group.

The Yorktown High School men and women won the team titles in the 6D region. McLean sophomore Catherine Hughes won both of her individual events, while Yorktown sophomore Nolan Dunkel won two individual events on the men’s side.

Hughes won the 200 IM in 2:02.79 and the 100 breast in 1:02.51. Hughes placed fourth and second in the events at last year’s Virginia 6A State Championships, respectively. Her time in the IM was a personal best, while her 100 breast time was just shy of her best time of 1:02.18, which she swam at the State meet. She has the 25th fastest time in the 100 breast in the 15-16 age group this season.

Nolan Dunkel took the 100 fly in 48.47 and the 100 back in 48.81. He is the defending state champion in both events, where he swam a 49.22 and a 49.14, respectively. He was faster in the fly at Juniors, swimming a 48.36. His 100 back time was a personal best and the first time that he went under-49.

McLean High School freshman Aaron Jia swam the 200 IM in 1:55.01, and the 100 breast in 59.11, both best times. Jia’s IM is the 18th fastest this season in the 13-14 age group. His 100 breast is ranked 24th in his age group this season. At last year’s 6A state meet, Jia’s 200 IM time would have placed fourth, while his 100 breast would have placed 10th.

Other Notable Swims

  • Yorktown junior Bridget Morris Larkin swam a prelim 100 breast time of 1:03.31. Larkin was seventh at the state meet last year, while her time from the regional would move her up to fifth.
  • James Madison sophomore Charlotte Dixon won the 100 back in a season best time of 56.20, a time that would have placed fourth at the state meet last season. Her best time is 56.02, set in December (that time would have placed third at the state meet).
  • Yorktown sophomore Rachel Conley won the 100 fly in 55.46. Conley was eight at state in the event as a freshman, where she swam a time of 57.03. Her time from the regional meet would have placed fifth last season.
  • Herndon Hornets junior Noah Dyer won the 200 free and 100 free. Dyer is the defending state champion in the 200 free, and was runner-up last season in the 100 free. He swam a 1:38.26 to win the 200, which was faster than his state winning time of 1:38.82. His 45.15 in the 100 free was also faster than his time at state last season, when he swam a 45.61. Dyer is committed to swim at the University of Virginia.

Lots of great swims from the Yorktown girls in the 6D region. Let’s not overlook that Lauren Hartel of Yorktown was a double winner in the 200 Free and 500 Free while following up just 6 minutes after finishing the 500 in the 4×50 Relay. Go Patriots!
