The countries occupying the top three spots of the medal standings from yesterday remain there after three days of competition at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships. However, whereas the United States sits with the same medal totals with no podium placements on the day, Australia and Russia were able to capitalize on swimmers racing in finals to rake in the hardware.
Russia acquired two medals in the men’s 100m butterfly event alone, with Daniil Pakhomov and Daniil Antipov claiming gold and bronze, respectively. Russia also saw Arina Openysheva score a bronze medal in the women’s 100m freestyle to add to the country’s total medal count.
Australia bumped up its total medals by two after tonight’s finals, with backstroke sensation Minna Atherton doubling up on her earlier 100m backstroke win with a second victory in the 200m distance. The Aussies’ mixed 4x100m freestyle relay secured a silver on the day as well.
Day 3’s biggest mover and shaker was the team from Canada, who brought home four medals on the day to jump from 9th to 4th in the overall medal standings. Taylor Ruck first earned bronze in the women’s 200m backstroke event, then turned around and nabbed gold in the 100m freestyle. Canada would finish 1-2 in the sprint, with teammate Penny Oleksiak snagging silver. To cap off an evening of success, Ruck would also medal as part of Canada’s victorious mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, which took gold in a new meet record.

Very impressive swims from canadian juniors….relays, ruck, oleksiak and, well, everyone peeking at right time. Are other countries having an off meet or do they just not put a high priority on this? I know it’s only day three but where’s France? Where’s Brazil? Sweden? Japan? South Africa? The junior calendar getting packed with YOG, European jr. championships etc and I wonder if countries aren’t taking this as seriously as the 10 on the list above?
Not in any way trying to water down what canada has done because their results are world class and would have been impressive in Kazan.
Canada is by far the nation which has made the most progress in the last 2 years.
USA. About 50% of its kids are out of shape at this meet. 3rd meet in 4 weeks for many of them who have peaked in early August to qualify unlike the other nations who send fresh swimmers who didn’t have to peak twice in 4 weeks.
France? No swimmer entered this week. That meet was definitely not in the calendar of the federation. Unfortunately.
Most improved nation in the last year, I wanted to say about Canada.
South Africa? They have sent only 8 swimmers in Kazan so imagine in the junior ranks….
