Canada has named 25 swimmers to their roster for the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

The athletes competed over five days at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto vying for spots on the team.

The women’s team will be comprised of 12 swimmers, led by reigning 100 back world champion Kylie Masse, current 100 free Olympic champion Penny Oleksiak, and 2018 Commonwealth and Pan Pac gold medalist Taylor Ruck.

Women’s Roster

Women Event(s) Qualified
Kylie Masse 100/200 BK
Taylor Ruck 100/200 FR, 100/200 BK
Sydney Pickrem 200 BR, 200/400 IM
Kelsey Wog 200 BR, 200 IM
Mackenzie Padington 400/800/1500 FR
Penny Oleksiak 100/200 FR
Kayla Sanchez 400/800 FR-R
Maggie MacNeil 100 FLY, 400 FR-R
Kierra Smith 100 BR
Emily Overholt 400 IM
Rebecca Smith 100 FLY, 800 FR-R
Emma O’Croinin 400 FR

The men will actually send more athletes to Gwangju than the women with 13 making the team.

There were four who were added at the conclusion of the meet after not qualifying automatically with either a top-2 finish and FINA ‘A’ cut in an Olympic event or finishing top-4 in the 100 or 200 freestyle.

Richard Funk and Josiah Binnema were added for the 400 medley relay as winners of the 100 breast and 100 fly respectively, while Gabe Mastromatteo and Joshua Liendo (the runners-up in those events) were also added to the roster. Liendo also finished 5th in the 100 free, so he’s an option for the 400 free relay as well.

Men Event(s) Qualified
Markus Thormeyer 100 FR, 100/200 BK, 800 FR-R
Yuri Kisil 400 FR-R

Jeremy Bagshaw 800 FR-R
Mack Darragh 200 FLY
Richard Funk 400 MR
Josiah Binnema 400 MR

They have an odd way of putting people on a team. For example they did not have 1 Male make the 200 Free “A” Standard but they are going to send a 800 meter Relay team. Good Luck!

21 individual event swims from 11 women, and only 6 individual swims from 4 men, with 3 of those 6 coming from Thormeyer. By contrast, six women will have multiple individual events.

About the choice to add Liendo and Mastromatteo.
1) These youngsters, come Worlds, could be more competitive, for the relays, than other swimmers who for a few hundredths swam faster at these Champs.
Moreover there a lot of relays at Worlds, so room for swimming.
2) It’s clear the will to widen the mens roster with those youngsters, beside Cole Pratt already qualified, who in the next years can be protagonists. A first experience on Worlds stage for them.

Is this “final” in terms of events that everyone will be swimming? It would seem crazy to me that they wouldn’t use Kisil in 50fr, or Funk in 100br (for example) given that they’re bringing them anyway, they won an event, and those guys have made the ‘A’ cut before. Kind of seems like a waste to have them only swim relays.

Can the three 16 yo guys still go to world juniors if they are picked for the senior team?

Yes. The Worlds are in July and the World Juniors are in late August. In fact, the Selection Criteria document for the Cdn World Juniors expects athletes to attend both, if they are nominated for both. Emma O’Croinin is also a junior.

Gabe Mastromatteo: Silver, Silver, 5th, no FINA A
Joshua Liendo: Silver, 4th, 4th, 5th, no FINA A
Peter Brothers: Gold, Gold, Silver, no FINA A

Canada’s men’s teams are not deep enough to switch out relay swimmers from the morning to the evening, and they can’t enter a 2nd swimmer in individual events unless both are under the FINA A, which was not the case in any men’s event. What are Gabe and Joshua going to swim? And why were they included over Peter Brothers? Can anyone explain this?

Seems quite simple
They want backups for the relays
Olympic qualification is the goal
They want more than 1 breasstroker and figures Darragh was not fast enough to backup for binnema. All other backups were already filled by guys and girls already selected

Hmmmm, have you looked at whether they have the Fina B cut in the events that they placed second and whether Brothers achieved the B cut in the events that he won?

Not to justify this decision, but Canada’s performance in the relays at Worlds impacts whether or not they’ll have a relay slot at the Olympics next year. Performances in any individual event this year don’t have any bearing on whether they’ll qualify anyone next year. So they seem to be doubling down on qualifying relays for the Olympics. Still, I feel badly for all those women with fina A cuts who didn’t make the team. It seems to me that swim Canada could have added alternates to the women’s team to have greater depth at relays since, they could have had alternates swim in the heats and still make finals

Maybe Brothers will be named to the PanAm team. Are those announcements out?

No Acevedo! Not that he deserved it but has to be disappointed that he made Rio 3 years ago but hasn’t progressed. They took two youngsters as alternates.

You are right. He did not “deserve it”. To bad. Talk to Matt about it!

Or maybe realize that he was injured twice this season and tapered for NCAA’s literally a week ago. Hard to do especially without the normal base of training he should have had. It was not a great year for him but he is not going to roll over and die because it wasn’t what he wanted/expected

I agree. The injuries would have played a factor in his training. The taper for NCAA’S also would not have helped but Taylor Ruck had a big meet and a busy NCAA’S. This guy is going to have young competition for 2020 with those 2 young swimmers , if they keep improving.

Taylor did have a good trials meet, especially the 100 back. The slightly longer turnaround may have helped a bit but overall I just think the lack of training was the main factor that hurt Javi. I expect he will do everything he can to make it to Tokyo. The fast younger guys is a great sign and will stop the current top guys from getting complacent. Overall it is good for everyone
