Wit the Canadian National Championships coming to a close on Sunday night, Swimming Canada named their rosters for both the Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the Youth Olympic Games. The Junior Pan Pacs will take place August 23-27 in Suva, Fiji, while the Youth Olympics will take place from October 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“We’re really excited,” said National Development Coach Ken McKinnon. “We have a lot of new names of first-time junior team members, and our men’s team is starting to come up to equally balanced with the women’s team.”
Highlighting the rosters is Alexander Pratt of the Cascade Swim Club, who won three gold medals during the National Championships in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles. Joining him on the Youth Olympic Games roster is Alexander Milanovich and Gabe Mastromatteo, both of whom tied for gold in the 50 breaststroke. The fourth male heading to Buenos Aires will be Joshua Liendo, who had three top-5 finishes including a bronze in the 200 fly.
The women’s side is highlighted by individual winners Avery Wiseman (50 breast) and Maggie MacNeil (100 fly). They’ll be joined by Nina Kucheran, who won a pair of medals in the breaststroke events, and Kyla Leibel, who was the runner-up in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. All eight swimmers who qualified for the Youth Olympics will also be heading to Fiji.

Can’t say I’m surprised that Kayla Sanchez isn’t on the roster, even though she’s still a junior. She’s already more than good enough for the senior team. Of course, she alone might be good enough to win Canada’s team pretty much any relay gold at the meet.
Or Jade Hannah and Faith Knelson… Going for the 3rd pan pacs slots for their respective events?
At their level, that kind of experiece would be good. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Faith Knelson is Canada’s best women’s breast stroker by this time next year.
Knelson’s best time this year for 100m is 67.30, Wiseman (who’s a year younger) just went 68.46, she’s gonna have competition. She also went 2:28.20 in the 200, .25 quicker than Knelson’s best in the event
Kate Sanderson (who had on her instagram US Junior National Team which has now been changed) is an interesting name to see here. Not really a fan of internationals joining our team for an easier spot (Santo cough) but we’ll see how she goes.
Where is Elbert? Without him the sport of swimming is nothing.
What about Asia Minnes? Won 6 medals last year at RBC Canadian Junior Championships and not on the roster.
