Canada’s Artistic Swimmers Excel in Budapest, Maltsev Dominates Male Events

Jacqueline Simoneau of Canada exceled this weekend in Budapest (HUN) at the second leg of the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series 2021 as she pocketed the two solo events as well as the two duet events gold medals at stake.

Together with partner Claudia Holzner, the Canadian veterans claimed victory in the duet technical, accumulating 88.3284 points. They were followed by the sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini Alexandri representing Austria (87.2604) and Shelly Bobritsky / Eden Blecher of Israel closed the podium with 83.1200 points.

With an impressive score of 90.3668, the Canadian duet asserted their dominance in the duet free (90.3668), while the Alexandri sisters and the Israeli pair also claimed silver and bronze in this event, with respectively 89.3001 and 85.1332 points.

Jacqueline Simoneau was the best in the solo technical and free as she scored 89.2788 and 91.0668 respectively. Vasiliki Alexandri (AUT), triplet sister of Anna-Maria and Eirini, was second with 87.6495 in the solo technical and also took silver in the free routine (88.7667). Liechtestein’s Lara Mechnig earned bronze for her solo technical performance (80.9871) and Slovakia’s Nada Daabousova ranked third in the solo free (78.3333).

The three events of the Budapest leg that included a male swimmer, namely the male solo technical and the mixed duet routines were topped by World champion Aleksandr Maltsev of Russia. He claimed the solo technical gold in 91.6514, while Mayya Gurbanberdieva accompanied him for the duet technical victory (92.3789). Maltsev then changed partner for the duet free and added another gold medal to his tally with Olesia Platonova (92.7999).

Hungary was the other nation to medal this weekend with triumphs in the team technical, team free and free combination.

The Artistic World Series next stops in Kazan (RUS) from April 16-18.
