Canadian swimmer Colin Gilbert is the latest Canadian to commit to an NCAA program in the United States, giving his verbal to the University of Denver.
Training with Kamloops Classic Swimming in Kamloops, British Columbia, Gilbert has already made his mark in Canada. As a member of the 2014 Canadian Youth Olympic team, Gilbert competed in Nanjing, China.
There Gilbert finished 18th overall in the boy’s 800m freestyle with a time of 8:20.43. He also added a 25th place finish in the 400 free.
Gilbert went on to represent Canada as part of the GHF Australian Age Championships team where he won two bronze medals.
“I chose the University of Denver because it fulfilled both my academic and athletic ambitions both on campus and back in Canada,” said Gilbert. “The university and swim program have many benefits as well as a dedicated and amazing coaching staff.”
Gilbert is primarily a distance swimmer specializing in the 1500m freestyle. In short course meters his best time is a 15:23.30. He also swims an 8:12.69 800m freestyle, and a 1:50.56 200m freestyle.
Although Gilbert’s focus is freestyle, he also boasts an impressive long course 200m butterfly with a time of 1:59.60.
The University of Denver has a history of hosting some top level Canadian swimmers such as Blake Worsley and Sam Corea.
