Lauren Lalumiere from the Oakville Aquatic Club in Canada gave her verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2014-2015 season, bringing some powerful freestyle swims that will put her in the Minnesota distance-group.
“I’m super excited to be on such a powerhouse team,” Lalumiere said. “My coach [Sean Baker] and I are really happy with my decision and we are really looking forward to how Minnesota will help me improve my events.”
Lalumiere is a distance swimmer all-around, and has been one of the most successful swimmers her age in Canada in the distance events. This summer she managed to take home a silver medal at the Canadian Age Group Nationals in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the 1500. She also made finals in every freestyle event down to the 200 where she placed eighth.
In the 400 she managed a sixth place finish; in the 800 she touched in at fourth.
Currently, Lalumiere doesn’t have much experience in short course yards considering that Canadians swim their short course season in meters, however, her conversion times are just off the 2014-2015 NCAA B-standard in almost every event, her closest being the 200 freestyle where her conversion time is a 1:49.77 and the standard is 1:47.99.
Lalumiere has another year to improve before she hits the blocks at Minnesota to start her college career, and is so close to making those time standards. It’s a likely scenario she’ll be able to before she starts next season.
Her college career seems promising as she’ll join the ranks of a great distance group and a great coaching staff at Minnesota.
“I wanted to be on a team that I was going to really be pushed to reach my goals and I know that’s exactly what I am going to get…oh and GO GOPHERs.”
