Canadian Women Shatter National Record In Women’s 4×50 Free

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

After scaring the World Record last night in the 4×200 free relay, the Canadian women did it again tonight in the 4×50 free, winning gold in a time of 1:35.00. That time was just over seven tenths off the World and Championship Records of 1:34.24, set by the Netherlands at the 2014 Championships in Doha. They did smash their own National Record of 1:37.91, set this morning in the prelims. Prior to this morning, the record stood at 1:38.96 from 2013.

Michelle Williams led off in a very quick 24.07, and three sub-24 splits from Sandrine MainvilleTaylor Ruck and Penny Oleksiak got the job done. Finishing 2nd was the defending champions, the Netherlands, in 1:35.37, and Italy took 3rd in 1:35.61. Ranomi Kromowidjojo had the fastest split in the field at 23.11, which bodes well for her in the 50 free final later tonight.

Both Oleksiak and Ruck were part of the relay that won gold last night in the 4×200, when Canada won their first gold of the meet. Oleksiak will swim the anchor in the final event of the night, the women’s 4×100 medley relay.
