Canadian World Junior Swimmer Meryn McCann Commits to Georgia

For more commitment articles, be sure to check out SwimSwam’s College Recruiting channel.

FINA World Junior silver medalist Meryn McCann has verbally committed to the University of Georgia Bulldogs. She helped lead the Canadian 800 LCM freestyle relay to a 2nd-place finish at the 2015 World Junior Championships. She will join Canadian National Team teammate Javier Acevedo in Athens next fall.

McCann says, “I was always at the pool when I was younger watching my older sister swim, by five I decided to follow in her footsteps. Ever since then I have loved it. On my recruiting trip to Georgia I felt at home, the campus is beautiful and the team is amazing. I think the coaches are a perfect fit for me, their program has been one of the best in NCAA swimming for many years, and I really think they will be able to help me reach my best. I look forward to excelling in both the pool and academics at the University of Georgia.”

McCann’s LCM meters best times (with yard conversions):

  • 100 freestyle: 57.14 (50.03)
  • 200 freestyle: 2:01.62 (1:46.68)
  • 400 freestyle: 4:20.25 (4:51.59)
  • 100 backstroke: 1:02.83 (55.52)
  • 200 backstroke: 2:10.34 (1:55.26)
  • 200 IM: 2:21.25 (2:04.36)

McCann was a 1st place finisher in the 200 LCM backstroke, 3rd place in both the 100 LCM and 200 LCM freestyle events at the 2015 Canadian Age Group Championships this past summer. She also finished 4th in the 100 LCM backstroke and 5th in the 400 LCM freestyle. McCann’s results at this meet show a promising future with Canadian Swimming.

She will join new teammates freestyler/backstroker Mary Cardwell, backstroker Katherine Parker, freestyler/backstroker Katherine Aikins, freestyler Sandra Scott and breaststroker/IM’er Jordyn Gulle in the Bulldogs class of 2020. The University of Georgia women’s swimming have done a lot of backstroke recruiting for the freshman year next fall, but McCann will be a great addition to the Bulldogs.

Don’t forget about Indiana Carmel standout Veronica Burchill as part of the class of 2020!

Veronica Burchill from Carmel Swim Club also verbally committed to UGA.

Something must be wrong with those conversions because the odds of her being able to do a 1:55 in the 200 back with a 55 in the 100 are slim. She would need to go out at a 55 if not faster in the 200 back. Possible… but not likely.

Meryn seemingly takes 100 m to warm up and has had a negative split in virtually every 200 m backstroke she’s ever raced (check out all her race times on line). There’s nothing incorrect or wrong with the times or the conversions.
