The boys of the Canyons Aquatic Club have broken a National Age Group record at the American Short Course Championships, going 1:22.88 to top the mark set by Ryan Hoffer and the Scottsdale Aquatic Club last year.
Canyons put up the time in a time trial Friday morning, chopping four tenths off the old NAG record, which was also set in a time trial last August.
On the relay were Kevin Dai (16), Johnny Ellery (16), Tanner Olson (15) and Brandon Young (16). The foursome broke the record with a much more balanced attack than the previous owners. Canyons had all four boys split between 20.5 and 20.8, while Scottsdale was led by a 19.8 split from Jack Blake in 2014.
Here’s a splits comparison of the old and new records:
Canyons 2015 | Scottsdale 2014 | ||
Kevin Dai | 20.58 | Ryan Hoffer | 20.31 |
Johnny Ellery | 20.85 | Jack Blake | 19.81 |
Tanner Olson | 20.63 | Aaron Apel | 22.02 |
Brandon Young | 20.82 | Kaleb Gould | 21.06 |
1:22.88 | 1:23.20 |

Looks like the second swimmer has an unwavering love for that lane line
I went back and looked up these 4 guys on usa swimming database. What dramatic time drops they had! Well done swimmers…and looks to be great coaching too.
4 sprinters with talent
That’s good but I have confidence Scottsdale will break it again. Ryan’s fastest fifty alone would have crushed the Canyons. Nonetheless good job to them.
It takes 4 guys not one
Way to Canyons and Coach Coley!
