Steve Yancey, the longtime aquatics coach of Capistrano Valley High School, plans to retire in June. The 59-year-old gave his letter of intent on Monday, May 7th to school principal John Misustin. This was originally reported by the O.C. Register, whose article can be found here.
Yancey successfully restored the Cougars boys program into a CIF-SS Division 1 power, and also found success in water polo, including being named the 2015 O.C. boys water polo coach of the year.
“I want to thank all of the Administrators, Coaches, Parents, and Athletes that have helped and assisted me to do both jobs, while I was at San Clemente HS and Capistrano Valley HS,” Yancey said. “Without them, I would have never experienced the successes that were such a blessing during my tenure.”
In retirement, Yancey will spend time with his wife, Lisa, who is battling Parkinson’s disease.
“Our good days are now,” he said Monday. “I will miss the battle but I need time with my wife.”
He has been coaching with Capistrano Valley since being hired in 2001, and has been named boys swimming coach of the year in his time at the school, in addition to winning the award for water polo.
Yancey guided the Cougars’ boys swim team to CIF-SS Division 1 titles in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013 and a runner-up finish in 2011. He also led the boys water polo team to the CIF-SS Division 3 finals in 2015, where they lost to Murrieta Valley.
Prior to his time at Capistrano Valley, Yancey coached with San Clemente, leading the team to a CIF-SS Division 4-A title in 1991 with future Olympian Jeremy Laster on the squad. He was also named O.C. boys water polo coach of the year that season. He first began his coaching career in 1980 at Long Beach State and Beach Aquatics.
