Auburn swept Alabama in an in-state SEC rivalry on Wednesday. Junior Carly Cummings was huge for Auburn, winning all 3 of her individual events. Cummings swept the breaststrokes by considerable margins. Cummings swam a 1:01.81 in the 100 breast, getting her hands on the wall first by half a second. She then swam the 200 breast, where her final time of 2:13.42 marked a new season best, coming in under her mid season invite time of 2:13.87. Cummings also won the women’s 200 IM, where she swam a 2:00.79.
Alabama’s Kensey McMahon and Auburn’s Emily Hetzer battled it out in the women’s distance events. McMahon won the 1000 in a quick 9:48.64, leading Hetzer by 3.27 seconds. Hetzer than turned around and pulled it out in the 500, where she clocked a 4:48.56 to win by 1.99 seconds. McMahon also swam the 200 free immediately after the 1000, coming in 3rd with a 1:49.79.
Bama’s Alexis Preski was victorious in the women’s 200 fly, swimming a 1:59.91 to finish as the only swimmer in the field under 2:00.
Alabama posted a fast time in the 400 free relay, roaring to victory in 3:18.82. Auburn was not far behind, clocking a 3:19.34 with their A relay. Bama was helped most by 49.18 (Kalia Antoniou) and 48.44 (Flora Molnar) splits on their middle legs.
Alabama freshman Liam Bell continued to be a force in the men’s breaststroke events this season. Bell took the men’s 100 breast in 55.57, out-touching fellow Bama freshman Derek Maas by .39 seconds. Maas and Bell came in 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 200 breast (2:04.35/2:04.85), while Auburn’s Spencer Rowe won in 2:02.82.
The Tide also posted a quick time in the 200 medley relay, where Zane Waddell, Derek Maas, Tyler Sesvold, and Jonathan Berneburg combined for a 1:27.59. Waddell was stellar leading the team off, clocking a 21.44. Individually, Waddell swam a 48.14 to win the 100 back. He also won the men’s 50 in 20.26.
Auburn’s Santiago Grassi swept the men’s fly events. Grassi first touched in 1:48.37 to win the 200 fly comfortably. He then swam a 48.06 in the 100 fly, narrowly out-touching Tyler Sesvold of Auburn (48.12).
Looks like AU is back on track beating up on Alabama. Hope they can get better and compete for SEC title too
