Carmel High School will be vying to become the winningest team in the country by winning their 30th consecutive State Championship title. The Greyhounds, currently led by Head Coach Chris Plumb, have not lost at the state championship meet since 1985. Carmel is tied with the Honolulu Punahou Boys Swim team at 29 consecutive state championships.

This weekend, Carmel’s Claire Adams and Veronica Burchill will likely lead their team to the state title.
National Team member Claire Adams is entered in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She will be chasing her former teammates’ state record in the 100 freestyle (48.36, Amy Bilquist) and Olivia Smoliga’s national record in the 100 backstroke (51.43). Last year, Adams set the state record in the 100 backstroke at 51.99 and then split 48.6 on the 400 freestyle relay.
Junior National Team member Veronica Burchill will be swimming the 100 butterfly as her only individual event and will then race on all three relays. Carmel broke all three national high school relay records at the 2014 state meet, and then again last year in 2015. Burchill will have a lot of competition in the 100 butterfly this year. It should be a great race between Burchill, Crown Point’s Hannah Kukurugya, also a junior national team member, and Chesterton’s Vanessa Krause. All three swimmers have been 53.4 or faster. Burchill could challenge the national high school record of 51.70 as well. She set the state record in the 100 fly last year at 52.26.
The prelims session will begin on Friday night, and the finals session will take place Saturday afternoon.
