Caroline Lee Joins Growing Georgia Tech Backstroke Squad

Caroline Lee, of SNOW Swimming in Northern Virginia, has committed to swim for the Georgia Institute of Technology. Lee is strongest in backstroke, with increasingly better results the shorter the distance:

  • 50 backstroke: 26.12
  • 100 backstroke: 55.26
  • 200 backstroke: 2:03.39
  • 100 fly: 56.98

Lee’s profile will make her an immediate contributor to the Yellow Jackets, where she would have been the fastest 100 backstroke swimmer on last year’s team. Her 100 time also puts her just a tenth of a second outside scoring at last year’s ACC Championship.  The Yellow Jackets were eleventh out of thirteen teams at last year’s meet, besting Clemson (who fields only divers) and Boston College. With individual scoring swims few and far between for Georgia Tech, this is a huge pickup. Lee was one of the top high school swimmers in Virginia, leading off Heritage High School‘s 4A State Champion 200 medley relay and finishing runner up in the 100 backstroke.

One of the reasons Georgia Tech did not score at last year’s ACC Championships in backstroke was that their best backstroker wasn’t able to compete at the meet. Sophomore Alex Rieger had recorded a 1:59.84 at their midseason invite, a time well within scoring range. Reiger is not as strong in the 100, so Lee and Reiger will compliment each other well at the top of Tech’s backstroke depth chart. Freshmen Sara Gilbert has also been 55 in 100. The Yellow Jackets are definitely building an identity around backstroke, one of the specialties of Head Coach Courtney Shealy Harts own swimming career.
