Caroline McElhany Scratches 200 IM Semifinal, Penn State Bumped In

In a bit of a surprising move, Texas A&M’s Caroline McElhany scratched the women’s 200 IM semi-final after coming from an early heat to finish 11th overall in 2:15.09. She already had a swim in the 100 fly semi-final, and looked coming into the wall for this half-second best time like she still had a lot of gas left to give with a big powerful kick behind her.

The reasoning is a bit curious, as we don’t see any other races she’ll have in tonight’s evening session. None-the-less, that bumps up Penn State’s Merritt Krawczyk into the Semi’s for the first time of her career. She’s a very good backstoker and butterflier.
