Carter, Tjon-A-Joe Hit 49s in CISC 100 Free Dual; 3 Earn B Cuts

CARIBBEAN ISLANDS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The third of four days at the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISCs) was highlighted by an outstanding 100 free showdown, with Dylan Carter and Renzo Tjon A Joe both hitting FINA “B” cuts.

Carter won the event in 49.33, just a tick off his 2016 best of 49.31. That’s about a second and a half under FINA’s “B” cut, and currently sits just inside the top 100 worldwide. Carter will be one of the top swimmers for Trinidad & Tobago this summer.

Tjon A Joe, who competes for Suriname, was 49.71 for runner-up honors. That’s also well under the “B” cut, but not as good as the 49.29 Tjon A Joe put up in Eindhoven in April.

The night’s other “B” cut came courtesy of Mexico’s Diana Luna Sanchez. She’s listed on Meet Mobile results at 2:13.08, which would get under FINA’s “B” cut standard of 2:13.86. Sanchez was one of just two swimmers in the event for the open age class.

The CISCs are taking place in the Bahamas and will run through July 2nd, with the meet representing the final opportunity for Olympic qualification for some nations.

Joanna Evansthe rising Bahamian swimmer who notched a “B” cut on Thursday, won two events, but narrowly missed another “B” standard in the 100 free. Evans was 56.74 to win that event, four tenths off the cut. She also won the 200 IM.

Doubling up on the men’s side was Matthew Lowe, also of the Bahamas. The 21-year-old won the 200 IM and 200 fly.
