14-year old Cassidy Bayer of the Nation’s Capital Swim Club (NCAP) has broken one of those all-time, all-time National Age Group Records on Saturday night at the 2013 Tom Dolan Invitational.
Opting to race in her 13-14 age group, rather than the Open Final, Bayer swam a 1:56.01 in the 200 yard fly, which broke the 1:56.58 that Mary T. Meagher swam back in 1979. At the time, Meagher was already one of the best swimmers in the world, and the longevity of her record proves that.
Bayer has been lighting up the butterfly NAG Record books in the last few years. Besides Meagher, she also counts Olympic champion Dana Vollmer among the names on her hit list, though until now most of her damage had been done in long course.
It’s been a while since the United States had a young female butterflier of Bayer’s caliber come along. Next she’ll target Meagher’s long course records, which are probably the greatest still standing in USA Swimming.
Egerszegi has found her successor in Franklin, and Evans has found hers in Ledecky.
Will Meagher find hers in Bayer?

It was the second oldest NAG record on the women’s side.
The 500 free 11/12 NAG record of 4.49.51 by Cynthia Woodhead in 1977 is still the oldest.
Miss Bayer isn’t just a butterfly swimmer.
She’s very versatile.
At the same meet she has swum 4.15 in the 400 IM and 23.29 in the 50 free.
