Cassidy Bayer Gets Another, Takes Down Dana Vollmer NAG Record

Cassidy Bayer already has one National Age Group Record to her name from the last month. But her latest swim is going to make bigger shockwaves.

On Friday night, at the PVS long course senior championships, she took down the 11-12 National Age Group Record in the 100 fly that previously belonged to none other than Olympian and American Record holder Dana Vollmer. Bayer’s time was 1:02.31, which bested the 1:02.49 that Vollmer swam in the year 2000, when she was a 12-year old at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Vollmer was one of the greatest age group swimmers that the sport has ever seen, but now Bayer, from the Curl Burke swim team, has broken one of her best records. Bayer now is the holder of both the 100 and 200 fly records in long course for the 11-12 age group. She also snapped Courtney Kalisz’ 200 fly record with a 2:18.61 in late June. The 200 fly at this meet will come on Sunday, and with Bayer not aging up until September 9th she’ll still have more cracks at both records.

The meet, held at the University of Maryland pool, pitted Bayer against some of the best swimmers, of any age, of the Potomac Valley. In this race, she took down Texas sophomore Kaitlin Pawlowicz (1:03.50) and UNC’s Allison Haufler (1:03.77) despite being only 12-years old. She’s a full two-seconds faster ahead of the next-best 11-12 this year: Kayla Tennant from North Carolina’s STAR Aquatics.

Other big swims on Friday include Rockville-Montgomery’s Jack Conger in the men’s 200 free in 1:52.84. He’s likely back into the thick of training as he heads for the upcoming U.S. Open after a fairly successful run at Trials in Omaha.

Carsten Vissering, a 15-year old also from CUBU, won the men’s 100 breaststroke in 1:04.64. That’s a best time for him by over two seconds, and makes him the first 15-year old this season to go sub-1:05.

Bayer wasn’t the only 12-year old to win a race at this meet. Isabelle Rongione, a 12-year old from the FISH Swim Team, won the 400 IM in 5:03.78. That just misses her best time in the race, and she seems to be saving her taper for later meets this season.

Congrats to Cassidy Bayer. It’s impressive.
And for Jack Conger yes I agree about his potential on freestyle. I repeat that when I see him I see a little of Yannick Agnel 2 or 3 years ago. He’s tall and has no muscles. 2 years in the weight room and he easily swims 1.45 in the 200 free.

If Conger keeps working on his mid distance free he could be dangerous in 4 years for the 4×200. His 19.9 50 and 4:17 500 show talent and versatility that is virtually unprecedented for a high schooler, though he hasn’t shown that skill in long course freestyle yet. I’m going out on a limb and calling a 1:47 for Jack Conger in 2012 in the 2 free.

Conger went a 1:52 mid last night. He is a talented kid but I think a 1:47 in 3 weeks is a bit of a stretch.
A couple years, he will be there.

Oh wow, that was a typo! I actually meant 2016. I totally agree with you.
