Cassidy Bayer Hits Lifetime-Best 200 Free At PV Champs Friday

16-year-old Cassidy Bayer chopped more than three seconds off her lifetime-best to win the 200 free on Friday night at the PV Long Course Senior Championships.

Bayer went 2:02.81, besting the 2:06.26 she set at this meet back in 2013 as a 13-year-old.

Bayer, of course, is much more well-known as a butterflyer, and is coming off a finals appearance at U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 fly. Bayer swims for Nation’s Capital Swim Club (NCAP).

The boys 200 free also had a pretty solid swim Friday night, with NCAP’s Sam Pomajevich winning in 1:52.57. Pomajevich, one of the top rising high school seniors in the nation, was 1:51.80 in March, but this swim was close to what he swam at Olympic Trials a few weeks ago (1:52.27) and stands up as his third-best time ever.

Other event winners:

  • NCAP’s Kylie Jordan, who will start her freshman year at Duke in just a few months, was 1:00.67 to win the girls 100 fly. That’s within a half second of her best time ever.
  • The boys 100 fly went to another NCAP swimmer, Cole Cooper, in 56.12.
  • Michelle Owens won the girls 400 IM for The Fish in 4:57.46.
  • NCAP struck back in the boys 400 IM, though, closing the night with a 4:30.73 win from Lane Stone.

Full results are available on Meet Mobile under “2016 PV LC Senior Championships.”

“Coming of a finals appearance in the 200 fly at Olympic trials” is an understatement of what she accomplished. Bayer made a finals apparence in both butterfly events and finished 3rd in the 200 and 4th in the 100

Cassidy Bayer is not an average swimmer, but compared to her butterfly, her freestyle is pedestrian at best. I’m sure she knows this, and still swam the 200 free for fun. Good job on the PR – it would be kind of embarrassing if her 200 fly best got faster than her 200 free 🙂

I don’t think 2:02 is above average for a 16 year old girl.
Ajna kesely from Hungary who is 14 years old
( this year) is a 1:57 girl

Ai yanhan from China swam 1:57:21 last year as a 13 year old and 1:56 this year as a 14 year old. The thing is Ai yanhan is not tall. She,s like 5,7 but her stroke is very long and smooth. If she grows much taller, then she,ll be a nightmare in the 200 free.

I don’t think bobo GIGI was rude. That,s just my take

Carlo,
Please do not become like Bobo by comparing to the very best in the world. How many Kessely and Yanhan in the world? No, let me rephrase it, how many Kessely are there in Hungary?
How many Katie Ledeckys in the world? How many Cate Campbells in the world?
By comparing Bayer in 200 free (whose core events are 200/100 fly and how many times has she swum 200 free since 2013?) to Kessely and Yanhan, you’d be like comparing Amy Bilquist (whose best events are 100/200 back) in 100 free to Cate Campbell. What? Amy can only swim 56.15? That’s freaking slow. Cate swim 52.06.

Of course Bayer’s 2:02 is above average, even if we… Read more »

Not sure how Bobo’s comment is rude… This is a swimming website to critique and comment on swimming. It is business. 2:02 is in fact an average time for a 3rd place finisher at OT. DOn’t let feelings get attached when judging comments, the truth is said.

it’s rude because he’s comparing her to an 11 year old and suggesting that she is no better than someone 5 years younger, when she obviously is better

It isn’t rude. It is just commentary on her strengths and perspective on the time relative to others. If swimswam tried to recognize every time drop like this is would be impossible. Her prowess at this time is still in fly and Bobo has acknowleged that many times. It takes nothing away from what she does very well.

It may not be rude per se, but it is incredibly annoying.
Bobo does this often. He’d directly compare swimmers and go with low hanging fruits pointing out their perceived shortcomings judged from his flawed swimming knowledge. For example, everytime Simone Manuel threw down a quite nice time, he’d instantly wrote something “How can US expect to compete in sprint, Cate Campbell swims 52.0 in her sleep”
Imagine if more commenters write similar things, it would be unbearable.

He wasn’t talking about a third place finisher at OT, he was talking in terms of 16 year old girls. 2:02 is objectively above average for a 16 year old girl. Beyond that, it’s missing the point: Regardless of whether she is a better butterflyer or not, Cassidy Bayer is taking steps to potentially being able to aid the US in the freestyle events/relays later on in life.

In addition, I’m assuming she is back to the grind right now, as well, since Trials are over, so it’s probably a safe guess that this was untapered and unshaved. If so, 2:02 is fantastic.

Cassidy Bayer is one to watch. She made a great run at her events at Trials,… Read more »

But 2.02.81 remains a very average time for a 16-year-old girl. 11-year-old Claire Tuggle will probably swim that kind of times next year.
Cassidy is exclusively a butterflyer.

Actually Bobo, Claire is 12 apparently. According to her My Swimming Rank profile at least.

I think Bobo just wants to show off that he knows some 11 or 12 yo girls who swim faster time.

This is why you get a lot of down votes, Bobo. For rude comments like this that are irrelevant.

How is 2:02 average for a 16 year old??? That would mean way more 16 year old a were swimming at trials

Swimming exclusively one stroke all the time sucks. She’s still an age grouper, and age groupers want to drop time in as many events as possible because that’s how competitive kids work. I think Bobo’s rude comments come from the fact that he never swam

You’re right, Bobo. 16 year olds should only ever contest events in which they have a top 25 world ranking. Anything else is pure nonsense. Geez.

Exhibit A for anyone who wonders why Bobo catches downvotes even though the majority of his posts are very informative, and not rude or controversial.

Bobo is to SwimSwam as Sheldon Cooper is to Big Bang Theory. Sometimes the arrogance and know-it-all attitude causes me to bite my tongue and NOT comment.
