Swimming at the 2021 Settecolli Trophy, Arianna Castiglioni threw down a 1:05.67 Italian record, taking the mark from teammate Martina Carraro who set it earlier this year at a 1:05.86 at the 2021 Italian Championships in Riccione.
The swim for Castiglioni marks her second time ever under 1:06 in the 100 breaststroke. It’s an improvement upon her lifetime and season-best of 1:05.98 which she swam during the prelims of the event at the 2021 European Swimming Championships. She went on there to claim silver in the event with a 1:06.13 to Sophie Hansson‘s 1:05.69.
Castiglioni has now replaced Hansson as the #4 ranked woman in the event this season behind the top 3 Americans at the recent 2021 US Olympic Swimming Trials.

Notably, Castiglioni was actually not selected to compete in the 100 breaststroke for Tokyo as Martina Carraro and Benedetta Pilato earned the nominations for Italy. Considering that 3rd ranked Annie Lazor was not selected for Tokyo either as only the top 2 finishers at US Trials Lilly King and Lydia Jacoby were eligible, the 3rd and 4th ranked women in the event will be absent from the event in Tokyo.
While Italy’s fastest-ever 100 breaststroker won’t contest the event in Tokyo, Pilato and Carraro will still be competitive in the event as 8th and 9th ranked women in the event this season. Swimming alongside Castiglioni at Settecolli 2021, Pilato recorded a new lifetime best of 1:05.84 while Carraro was a 1:06.08 from the 2021 Italian Championships.
In terms of all-time world rankings, Castiglioni is now the 11th quickest 100 breaststroker in history:

FINA should allow a country to add a third competitor in just one event per gender, provided they hit a certain time standard or global ranking.
Yet she isnβt going to the Olympics because Carraro and Pilato were already selected
It was Pilato that swam 1:05:84, for a lifetime best and also under the previous Italian record of 1:05:86 that belonged to Martina Carraro
