Catlin Gabel School Sweeps Oregon 4A And Under State Championship Team Titles

The Catlin Gabel School girls and boys claimed the 2023 Oregon Class 4A/3A/2A/1A State Swimming Championship titles this past February in Beaverton, Oregon. 

The Catlin Gabel boys successfully defended their title with 70 points in total, winning by a 22-point margin over Newport. The girls’ meet was much closer and came down to the final event, which Catlin Gabel ended up winning. They secured the overall team title with 54 points, just three points ahead of Sweet Home.

Boys’ Recap:

Leading the way for Catlin Gabel on the boys’ side was junior Hodge Dauler, who won both of his individual events and contributed to the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Dauler clocked a 1:44.12 in finals of the 200 freestyle to win the event by nearly four seconds. He notched his second victory in the 100 fly, where he swam a personal best time of 51.05 in finals. 

The meet’s other double event winner was Newport junior Sam Postlewait, who won both the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Postlewait logged a personal best time of 21.77 in the 50 free, while in the 100 back he touched first in a best time of 43.04. 

Sophomore Adam Li was another major contributor for Catlin Gabel, as he won the state title in the 200 IM (1:55.85) and picked up 2nd in the 100 breast (1:00.36). Both of Li’s swims marked personal best times, with the 200 IM being a best by nearly four seconds.

Finishing ahead of Li in the 100 breast was La Grande senior Glenn Ricker, who swam a personal best time of 59.32. Rounding out the individual winners was Newport’s Ben Hurty, who took home the title in the 100 freestyle (49.62), and La Grande sophomore Zane Ricker, who touched first in the 500 free (4:50.73).

Postlewait was the anchor leg (21.75) of Newport’s winning 200 freestyle relay, where he combined with Will Postlewait (24.97), Hurty (22.45), and Braylon Belloni (24.86) for a final time of 1:34.03.

The other two relays belonged to Catlin Gabel, with the quartet of Akira van de Groenendaal (25.14), Li (27.03), Dauler (23.02), and Carson Rotter (25.30) winning the 200 medley relay in 1:40.49. The same team closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, swimming a 3:17.87 in finals. 

Girls’ Recap:

The girls’ side of the meet came down the 400 freestyle relay, where Catlin Gabel and Sweet Home battled things out for the team title. Junior Adrienne Tam got Catlin Gabel out to an early lead (53.31), while Alyssa Sanchez (1:00.26), Katie Jin (1:02.40), and Jane Hanson (56.75) held on to win the event by over four seconds and clinch the team title.

Tam successfully defended her 100 fly title, touching at 58.01 in finals. She also earned runner-up in the 200 IM with a best time of 2:08.82, finishing just a tenth behind Molalla junior Marie Mason (2:08.73). 

The sister duo of Sarah Koza and Becca Koza from Cove High School combined for three titles total. The older of the two, Sarah, got her hand on the wall first in the 50 free in a best time of 24.73. Her sister, who is just a freshman, won both the 500 (5:09.51) and 200 free (1:54.18), with the 500 free marking a best time by two seconds. 

Sweet Home freshman Breeza Rodriguez secured the state title in the 100 backstroke. She swam a 1:03.94 in finals, which was about two tenths off the best time she established in prelims the day before. Her teammate Kirsten Sautel touched first in the 100 breast in 1:08.22, while sophomore Elise Chamberland of St Mary’s School won the 100 free (54.70). 

Cascade Christian’s team of Ava Six (26.93), Maile Scaglione (27.31), Josie Scaglione (26.39), and Joezie Mitchell (25.41) won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.04. Sweet Home topped the field in the 200 medley relay, with the quartet of Peyton Markell (31.06), Sautel (30.69), Rodriguez (28.13), and Daisy Lalonde (27.24) finishing in 1:57.12.
