Spanish Olympic Team Member Castro has Successful Shoulder Surgery

The last year has been a special one Cesar Castro, unfortunately a shoulder injury has forced his season to end too soon.

Coming into the 2015 season Castro had a lifetime best time of 15:45.17 in the 1500 freestyle. In July he won the European Youth Olympic Festival posting a time of 15:24.02, the only meet record broken during the competition. He then went onto record another lifetime best in August at the World Junior Championships putting up a time of 15:17.10 and collecting the bronze medal in Singapore.

Castro also won the silver in the 400 freestyle at the European Youth Olympic Festival and the silver in the 800 freestyle at the World Junior Championships.

At the Spanish National Championships in March Castro won both the 200 freestyle and the 1500 freestyle. He qualified to swim the 1500 freestyle in Rio beating the reigning national champion Marc Sanchez by a second and a half, posting a time of 15:08.01.

In the last year and a half Castro, who turns 17 this calendar year, has dropped 37 seconds off his lifetime best in the 1500 freestyle, won his first two national championship titles and qualified for his first Olympic Games.

Unfortunately since the trials in March Castro suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder, which was surgically repaired last week. The surgery was performed by Dr. Angel Calvo who told the press that the operation was a great success, but that the recovery time from such a procedure will extend past four months.

Therefore he will not have the opportunity to compete in Rio, which means that no matter how great his performances have been over the last year Castro’s season will end in disappointment.
