Chad Le Clos Shatters 100 Fly World Record In 48.08

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

In an absolutely dominant performance, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos blew away his own 100 fly World Record in a time of 48.08, lowering the old mark of 48.44. That record was set at the last World Championships in Doha back in 2014, where he also won gold.

Le Clos was out well ahead of the field, and right on his World Record pace at the 50 in 22.59. He stormed home in a blistering 25.49 to dismantle his record by over three tenths of a second. American Tom Shields was the runner-up, nearly a full second back in 49.04, matching his position from Doha as well. The bronze medal went to David Morgan of Australia, who broke the Oceanic Record in 49.31.

Le Clos now has two gold medals to go along with a silver here in Windsor through three days of competition. After winning the 200 fly on day 1, Le Clos followed up with a silver in the 200 free last night. He has now successfully defended two of his titles from Doha, and will look to finish off the trifecta later in the week in the 50 fly. He’ll also swim the 100 free here in Windsor.

In the post race interview Le Clos noted it had been a rough year in and out of the pool, and dedicated the win to his mother and family. He also mentioned that he’ll be back in 2020 for ‘more gold medals’.

The Green Baron sure looks like he can dip below the 50 second mark LCM. Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough!
