2020 DIVISION 1 MEET 1 (SOUTH AUSTRALIA)
- Saturday, September 12th
- SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Oaklands Park, SA
- SCM (25m)
- Results: Meet Mobile
Australian Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers got wet this weekend, contesting the local South Australia Division 1, Meet 1.
Racing at his training home of the SA Aquatic & Lesure Centre, Chalmers led a squad of Marion swimmers who got some short course racing under their belts, which for many, marked the first time post-coronavirus lockdown.
22-year-old King Kyle got it done for the top prize in his sole event of the 100m freestyle, hitting the wall in a casual 48.33. Splitting 23.31/25.02, Chalmers’ time tonight was well off the 45.77 notched at the ISL competition in Budapest last October, but enough to beat out Marion teammate Travis Mahoney, who snagged silver here in 50.03.
Chalmers owns a lifetime best short course 100 freestyle time of 45.54, a performance he produced on the 2018 World Cup circuit. As such, his 48.33 time here is merely indicative of where the man is at training-wise post-lockdown and pre-2020/21 season.
Chalmers is set to represent London Roar once again for ISL season 2, Mahoney is repping Aqua Centurions, while Tristan Hollard and Leiston Pickett were revealed on DC Trident’s season 2 roster.
Hollard was in action this weekend as well, clocking a time of 51.92 in that 100m free event, while taking the 100m back, his discipline speciality, in a time of 56.75. For Pickett, the breaststroke put up an early-season 2:47.99 2breast.
Olympic finalist Madi Wilson was also in the water tonight, collecting a trio of gold medals. The 26-year-old LA Current season 2 member put up a time of 53.02 in the 100m free, 27.73 in the 50m back and 24.28 in the 50m free to further kick-off her short course season.
Wilson had already competed in July, posting a lifetime best of 52.29 in the 100m free event. That new PB kept Wilson in slot #7 among the all-time Aussie women short course 100 frestylers.
Her time of 24.28 here in the 50m free marks her fastest short course time ever, overtaking her previous mark of 24.53 from the aforementioned July meet. Both outings represent Wilson’s only sub-25 second short course results ever.
Sam Short broke another age record at another meet in Brisbane on the weekend. He went 7:43.85 in the 800 free SCM which was nearly 11s faster than #2 in the age group and also improved his age group standings in 200, 400 and 1500 free.
I’m a fan of Kyle Chalmers but the dude looks like he’s 42, not 22.
It’s a bad photo.
Haha, that was served up perfectly for you😁
The Greg Oden of swimming.
Don’t get me wrong I actually like Kyle and think he’s a great swimming, but can someone remind me what this guy is supposedly the King of? Are we anointing someone as a King after a single Olympic gold medal? What do we call someone who wins 2,3,4 individual golds? Should we call Joseph King Schooling as well? What about Mack? He won a gold in 2016 and even put himself on the line with that little protest. Aren’t we slighting Mack here?
Shouldn’t there only be one King in swimming? Perhaps the most dominant swimmer on the planet today? How about King Dressel? Even Kyle would bow down before him.
Come at me bro 🙂
Alliteration
Gold medal
There you go bro
Nice one Costanza.
I think Its because when he was an age group swimmer his nickname was the prince because he was the fastest 100m freestyle sprinter in age group history and he was set to be Australia’s next great sprinter. Then when he won gold in rio he became the king. I am not 100% sure on this though.
Also Dressel doesn’t have an individual gold medal at the Olympics so even though he has been the most dominant male swimmer from 2017-now it’s “meaningless” Unless he can prove himself at the games.
Meaningless? He’s only set a World Record and been the World Champion in multiple events. I agree the Olympic Gold is the ultimate achievement for a swimmer, but if your logic were true we 99.9% of all swimmers would have a meaningless career.
It is what it is. As unfortunate as it is i think most swimmers would take an Olympic gold medal over winning every event in between the games. And 99.9% of swimmers do have a meaningless career, but thats the nature of sport only one person can be the best. I could be wrong but i don’t think Dressel would be happy with his career unless he gets an Olympic gold.
I was with you until you wrote 99.9% of swimmers have a meaningless career. Wow. Just wow.
Well if it makes you feel any better only like 1% of swimmers even make a college team and less than 1% of them have a chance of making NCAA’s. So i mean winning State on a relay is a nice accomplishment but i wouldn’t say its a very meaningful accomplishment in the grand scheme of things.
Chalmers is the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s 100m freestyle. If/when he is dethroned, then ‘king’ may no longer apply.
OK, so whomever wins the mens 100m free is called “King” until they are beaten in an Olympics or fail to defend?
Why not?
I like this, we should definitely make it a thing
OK, I guess we can put up with this until next summer when Dressel beats him again and will have at least a 12 year reign.
Dream on Bro.
Relax, it’s purely an alliterative term.
Didn’t realize I was uptight about it? I thought I was having a little fun with you fan boys?
King of Australian sprinting. Plus he is a great Aussie sprinter that was actually able to deliver and win gold at the Olympics where Eamon Sullivan and James magnussen had failed previously.
Long of Australian sprinting doesn’t sound like much. Now I feel sorry for the guy.
Hey Bro, Mack, Schooling nor Dressel has won the gold in the 100 free at the Olympics.
But 2/3 of those guys have won an individual gold medal at the Olympics and 3/3 of them are olympic gold medalists
But none of them won Gold in the 100 free.
I like Queen Dressel.
As much as you imagine him in a stall I guess whatever works for you.
Said the stall-changer.
It is worse than passive aggressive , it’s just fake to say ‘ Don’t get me wrong, I like xx but…….then attack . Just omit that stuff & get on with your point .
Haha, the guy triggered you.
No, I’m a fan. I just don’t think he’s worthy of the King title. I’ll frame my attacks as I chose and you’ll do nothing about it.
I’d tell Gavin on you but he is out there camouflaged in his forest brown shirt on a picnic table in the haze .
Is that Chalmers PB from the same World Cup meet where Vlad went 44.9 and Pieroni 46.2?
2.47 for pickett??
She split 67 at a 100 then obviously shut down! She also went 31.1 50 free which I presume was breast!
Phew!
