Chalmers Wins His First 2016 World Cup Gold On Day 2 In Singapore

The 2nd day of the FINA World Cup stop in Singapore saw a new World Cup record set by Ukranian Mykhailo Romanchuk. After winning the 400 free yesterday, Romachuk completed his sweep of the distance races in today’s 1500 free. His 14:15.49 in that race crushed the previous World Cup Record of 14:27.65 set by Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri in 2013.

Aussie Kyle Chalmers narrowly missed another Junior World Record today, but he did bring home his first World Cup title of the series. Chalmers won the 200 free in 1:42.67, closing in on the 1:41.95 it would take for a new record.

Continuing her trend of World Cup dominance, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu hauled in 5 gold and 1 silver today. Her wins didn’t come easily, as Australia’s Emily Seebohm gave her a run for her money in the 100 back. Hosszu came away with the win there in 55.80 to Seebohm’s 56.08.

Both swimmers returned to the pool for the 100 IM, finishing even closer together that time. Seebohm rocketed to the lead at the 50m mark, but Hosszu roared home to win in 58.45 to Seebohm’s 58.54.

Hosszu also won the 400 IM (4:29.03), 200 fly (2:05.95), and 400 free (4:01.18).

Hosszu’s silver came in the 100 free, where she battled with Danish sprint ace Jeanette Ottesen. Yesterday, Hosszu broke Ottesen’s streak of World Cup wins in the 100 fly. In the 100 free Ottesen kept her streak alive, winning in 51.97 ahead of Hosszu (52.42) and the USA’s Kelsi Worrell (52.46).

Ottesen then picked up her 2nd win of the day in the 50 fly, where she clockeda 25.11 to finish ahead of Worrell (25.45).

Additional Event Winners

• Vlad Morozov continues to lead on the men’s side after winning both the 100 breast (56.80) and 50 free (20.86) today.
• Chad Le Clos, who currently sits 2nd behind Morozov in the overall men’s standings, was the only man under 50 seconds to win the 100 fly in 49.26.
• Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson was just a tenth off another World Record today. After missing the record by hundredths in the 100 breast yesterday, she popped a 28.91 to win the 50 breast today- narrowly missing Jessica Hardy’s World Record of 28.80.
• Team USA’s Breeja Larson brought home the 200 breast title, clocking a 2:18.95 to hold off Russia’s Yuliya Efimova (2:19.08).
• Belarusian Pavel Sankovich rocketed to a 50 back win with his 23.01 to stop Mitch Larkin‘s sweep of the backstroke races at this meet. Australia’s Larkin came back for a 200 back victory with his 1:50.22.
• Japan’s Daiya Seto grabbed his 3rd gold of the meet in the 200 IM, posting a 1:52.80 to finish ahead of German Record holder Philip Heintz (1:53.67) and Team USA’s Josh Prenot (1:54.19).
