The Brown Deer site of the 2021 YMCA Spring Festival kicked off last night, featuring the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 medley relay. The headline performances of the meet came at the end of the session, where both the Schroeder Y broke the YMCA National Records in both the women’s and men’s 200 medley relays. The women’s relay went first, shattering the previous record of 1:40.99 with their time of 1:38.94. Alana Berlin, Tori Brostowitz, Megan Hartlieb, and Sailor Whowell teamed up for that record-breaking relay.

Schroeder was actually the 2nd team to break the men’s 200 medley relay record last night, as GSCY broke the record with a 1:28.66 at the Voorhes, NJ site of the meet. Being an hour ahead, that happened before Schroeder Y came through and posted a 1:28.53. Ziyad Saleem, Owen Miller, Jack Lustig, and Ben Meulemans teamed up for Schroeder Y to break that record. Saleem led off in a personal best of 21.78, dipping under 22 seconds for the first time in his career.

Schroeder also picked up an individual win with Ben Meulemans winning the boys 50 free. He swam a 20.57 to take the event in finals, after swimming a 20.46 in prelims. Meulemans has a personal best of 20.44.

Individually, Champaign County Y (HEAT) picked up a pair of girls wins and a boys win. Angela Coe, a 16-year-old for the HEAT, posted a massive performance in the 200 IM, taking the event with a 1:59.18. The swim marked a huge improvement for Coe, who entered the meet with a 2:01.56. Coe got out to an electric start, splitting 25.49 on fly and 30.60 on backstroke, for a 56.09 on the first 100 of the race. Schroeder’s Tori Brostowitz, 15, nearly broke 2:00 herself, clocking a lifetime best of 2:00.54 for 2nd place.

Sally Ma, another HEAT 16-year-old, took the girls 50 free with a 23.02. The swim actually tied Ma’s personal best, which she had originally swum at the Illinois Open, which was hosted at the new FMC aquatic center in the Chicago area back in late March. Jake Regenwetter, HEAT 16-year-old, took the boys 200 IM with a 1:50.16. Regenwetter took half a second off his previous best, which he had swum at the Illinois Open as well.

Springfield Y’s Kayleigh Lovell took the women’s 500 free with a 4:53.13. The swim marked a lifetime best for Lovell, coming in under her previous best of 4:54.97, which was swum at a virtual meet back in November 2020.

DCST (Dekalb) 18-year-old Quinn Cynor posted  a dominant win in the boys 500 free, touching in 4:24.26. The swim was an absolutely massive drop for Cynor, who entered the meet with a personal best of 4:32.55, which he swam in March of last year. He took the race out hard, splitting 2:08.93 on the first 250, before coming home in 2:15.33.
