The first night of racing kicked off in Huntsville on Wednesday, with athletes taking to the pool for finals of the 200 free, 100 breast, and 200 fly. In an afternoon session dedicated to the distance races, women competed in the 800 free while the men raced the 1500.

Taking the win in both the women’s 200 free and 200 fly was National Team member Charlotte Hook of the TAC Titans. While Hook entered the meet as the top seed in the fly, she was only the 10th seed in the freestyle. After qualifying for finals in second, Hook blasted a 2:02.54 at night to claim the gold medal. That time ranks just outside of the top-100 in USA Swimming history for the 17-18 age group.

Later in the session, she picked up her second win in the 200 fly. Arguably her best event, she finished two seconds off of her lifetime best, touching in 2:09.80. Her best time in the event is from the B-final of the 2019 Summer Nationals when she won by two seconds in 2:07.87. That time would have been fast enough to take 4th in the A-final of that meet. At Wave II of Olympic Trials, she was just off that time when she took third in 2:07.92. She also has international experience in the event, having swum it at Junior Worlds in 2019. She took third in the event at that meet as well.

While she took second in the event, Hannah Bellard swam to a lifetime best in the event and a time that now stands as the 20th fastest in 15-16 history for USA Swimming. Entering the meet with a lifetime best of 2:12.57, Bellard touched in 2:10.40 during finals.

Owen McDonald of Dynamo Swim Club finished with the top time in the men’s 200 free. The 2022 Arizona State commit blasted a huge lifetime best in the event, taking exactly three seconds off of his time from February of this year to touch in 1:51.56.

In the women’s 100 breast, it was McDonald’s Dynamo teammate, Alicia Henry, who came away with the quickest time. After finishing first in prelims, she dropped almost another second in the finals to finish in 1:09.72. The 2021 Georgia 7A high school state champion in the short course version of the event, Henry will be joining the University of California this fall.

Continuing the dominance from the Atlanta-based club on the first day of racing, Arie Voloschin topped the field in the men’s 100 breast. The 2020 Georgia high school 1-5A runner-up in the event won over William Heck, touching in 1:02.42.

Michael Mullen of the Bolles School Sharks closed out the finals session with the top time in the men’s 200 fly. The 15-year old won the event easily, with his time of 2:00.32 being over a second ahead of runner-up Jackson Mussier.

During the afternoon’s distance session, Hannah Bellard led the way in the 800 free for the women. The 16-year old out of Club Wolverine finished in a time 8:38.84. A massive best time, Bellard is now the 30th fastest performer in USA Swimming history for the 15-16 age group.

The men’s distance event of the day, the 1500, saw Lance Norris of the TAC Titans come away with the fastest time of 15:33.75. While he didn’t swim the 1500 at Olympic Trials, he did race the 800, where he took 37th. His top finish at that meet was in the 200 back where he

ashamed? a bit dramatic. There have been very few U18 Natnl meets due to Covid Cwik. Coach you should know fast swimmers help others to swim faster… see second place in W2 Fly !

Why no US junior national championships this summer?

Combined with Nationals into one summer ‘championship’ split between Mission Viejo and Greensboro. 18U have different qualifying time. Top senior swimmers won’t be there due to Olympics so combine the two meets trying to provide best overall experience and competition available.

Thanks for the answer. But I would prefer only one place for the championships.
