The 6th edition of the USA Swimming Futures Championships (the 2020 championships were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic) will begin on Wednesday, July 28 and run through Saturday, August 1.

Held at four sites around the country (in 2021, it will be Huntsville, Alabama, Santa Clarita, California, West Fargo, North Dakota, and Richmond, Virginia), the Futures meets are designed to be a stepping stone between Sectional Championships and Junior National or senior National Championships. While they are primarily designed to help younger swimmers rise to the next level, there are no age or time limits and all swimmers who have met the time standards are eligible to race.

There are some big names descending on Huntsville this weekend.

National Teamer Charlotte Hook and TAC Titans teammates Lance Norris, Braeden Haughey, and Zachary Kohm are headlining several events. Hook is seeded first in the 200 fly (2:07.87), 400 free (4:17.27), and 200 IM (2:15.10). She is also competing in the 200 free (10th), 100 free (43rd), 50 free (67th). Norris and Haughey are the top 2 seeds in the men’s 200 back (2:00.02/2:00.38) and 400 IM (4:20.66/4:24.99). Norris also comes in with the #1 entry time in the 1500 free (15:36.52), #4 in the 400 free, and #12 in the 100 back. Haughey has the top entry time in the 400 free (3:56.42) and is also swimming the 100 back and 200 free. Kohm is first in the 200 free (1:51.99) and 800 free (8:10.89), 2nd in the 1500 free, 3rd in the 400 free, and 8th in the 400 IM.

Nashville Aquatic Club’s Gretchen Walsh is top seed in the 50 free (24.64), 100 back (1:00.26) and 100 fly (57.43). She is seeded second in the 100 free (53.74) and 200 free (2:01.12).

Micayla Cronk of Blue Dolphins heads the entrants in the 200 free (2:00.21) and is also swimming the 100 free (3rd), 400 free (9th), 100 back (16th), 200 back (19th), and 200 IM (78th).

Dynamo Swim Club’s Alicia Henry is top seed in the women’s 100 breast (1:10.04) which promises to be an exciting race, with the top four seeds all coming in sub-1:12: Annika McEnroe of Y-Spartaquatics (1:10.69), Katie Christopherson of US Aquatics Club (1:11.27), and Dynamo’s Ainsley Jones (1:11.67). McEnroe (2:31.53), Henry (2:31.87), and Jones (2:32.95) are the top three entrants in the 200 breast, as well. McEnroe is seeded first in the 400 IM (4:51.76).

Club Wolverine’s Hannah Bellard, who set a Michigan state record in the 500 free last weekend, is seeded 2nd behind Hook in the 400 free (4:20.03) and 200 fly (2:12.50). She is also 2nd to Walsh in the 100 fly (1:00.25), 2nd in the 800 free, 3rd in the 200 free, and 20th in the 200 back.

I completely agree with you! I know several swimmers who had Futures cuts who couldn’t get into the meet and didn’t get a cut meet when these swimmers who have OT cuts could have easily gone to the Speedo meet next weekend. If USA Swimming had kept the regular format where swimmers with the faster cuts went to Speedo and swimmers with Futures cuts went to Futures then more kids could have swam. Doesn’t seem like a good decision not to have upper limits… just thinking of the many swimmers who were sadly locked out of the meet.
