WOMEN’S RECAP

One of the highlights of the meet came on the boards. In her first college meet ever, Princeton first-year Charlotte Martinkus broke the Tigers’ program record in 1-meter diving, dominating the event with a final score of 322.50. She shattered the previous record, which stood at 312.50 from 2009. It’s safe to say Martinkus’ collegiate career is off to a great start, as she also won 3-meter diving with a score of 289.10.

Also competing in her first college meet ever, Princeton first-year Megan Reich was another two-event winner in the meet. Reich kicked off her meet, and her collegiate career, with a win in the 200 free, swimming a 1:51.17 to touch first by 1.54 seconds. She then went on to win the 500 free with a 4:56.43, getting out to a big early lead and holding it through the finish.

Another Brown first-year, Sumner Chmielewski, won the 200 fly in 2:04.05. She really pulled ahead on the third 50, carrying that momentum into the final lap. It was a 1-2 punch for Brown, with senior Nell Chidley touching second in 2:05.75. Chmielewski was a double event winner, also claiming victory in the 400 IM. She posted a decisive victory, swimming a 4:24.01 in the 400 IM.

First-years as a whole were terrific in this meet. Catherine Yu, a Brown first-year, won the 100 breast with a 1:04.79. Princeton’s Margaux McDonald (junior) and Eliza Brown, also a first-year, were out slightly ahead of Yu, but finished second (1:04.99) and third (1:05.04) respectively.

Princeton first-year Sabrina Johnston won the 100 free in 50.89, finishing as the only swimmer in the field under 51 seconds. Another first-year Tiger, Eliza Brown, won the 200 breast, swimming a 2:17.87. After losing to Yu in the 100 breast, Brown got out to an early lead in the 200, out-splitting Yu on each of the first three 50s. Yu would finish second in 2:18.54.

One last first-year, Meg Wheeler, who is also from Princeton, took the 200 back in 2:01.41.

In all, first-years accounted for ten of the 14 individual winners on the day, a truly remarkable showing.

Princeton senior Nikki Venema took the 50 free in 23.73, touching first by 0.20 seconds. Venema was a double event winner as well, also claiming victory in the 100 fly with a 55.53.

Brown’s Sara Barrett, a sophomore, was dominant in the 1000 free, swimming a 10:11.70 to win the race by nearly nine seconds. Another Brown sophomore, Jenna Reznicek, took the 100 back in 54.53, posting the fastest split in the field on both 50s.

In the 200 medley relay, Princeton’s Alexa Pappas (25.68), Eliza Brown (29.44), Nikki Venema (24.60), and Sabrina Johnston (23.03) combined for a 1:42.75, winning the event. Meanwhile, Brown won the 400 free relay, where Yvonne Jia (53.31), Anna Podurgiel (51.35), Kelly Dolce (50.89), Morgan Lukinac (50.60) teamed up for a 3:26.15.
