Two national records bit the dust on day six of the 2023 Chinese Nationals, both on the men’s side of the competition.
First, Sun Jiajun fired off a new national standard in the 50m breast, registering a time of 26.61 as the gold medalist.
Sun beat out on-fire Qin Haiyang, the man who already clocked a blistering 57.93 in the 100m breast and 2:07.55 in the 200m breast at this meet. Qin settled for silver in this sprint in a time of 26.72 while Yan Zibei rounded out the podium in 27.09.
As for Sun’s swim, his effort shaved .02 off of the previous Chinese record of 26.63 Qin put on the books just this past March at the Chinese Spring Nationals.
Sun now checks in as the 9th swiftest swimmer in history and the #2 performer in the world this season.

The second national record that went down was in the men’s 200m fly, courtesy of Chen Juner.
Chen ripped a lifetime best of 1:54.16 for the gold, beating out Niu Guangsheng and Wang Xizhe in the process. Niu snagged silver in 1:55.52 while Wang bagged bronze in 1:57.68.
As for Chen, his performance overtook the longstanding national record of 1:54.35, a time Wu Peng logged well over a decade ago at the 2008 Olympic Games. 35-year-old Wu has been engaged in a comeback this season and was actually racing here, placing 5th in the 50m fly earlier in the meet.
This isn’t the first time Chen has approached Wu’s national record. The 19-year-old already scored a time of 1:54.58 at the Chinese Spring Championships this past March.
Chen’s outing tonight now ranks him #3 in the world on the season, frog-hopping Canada’s Ilya Kharun and his time of 1:54.49 from the Canadian Trials.

It’s only May but we have had two Wu Peng related articles in 2023. It’s gonna be a great year.
Sorry to say but I saw a post earlier where he was quoted saying it may be his last swim ever as he didn’t perform well at this meet so he hasn’t qualified for Worlds
Chen Juner didn’t qualify for the 100 FL, which is a pity. In my opinion he has more potential than Wang Changhao and Sun Jiajun for this event. He just turned 19 and his PBs are
50 FR: 22.44
100 FR: 48.58
50 FL: 23.40
200 FL: 1:54.16
I think he can go under 51 seconds, which would give China gold chances in the 4×100 medley.
Could he still be put on the relay?
Wang Changhao admitted that he has let everyone down by not breaking the NR in the 100m fly. He mentioned that he is carrying an abdominal injury and will try to have a good rest and get it healed before competing again. I won’t be surprised if he skips WC and concentrates solely on just AG. AG Swimming programmes start on 24th Sept which are 2 months later than WC. He might be lucky to make top 16 at the WC but potentially he could medal at the AG based on current rankings.
The time of the winners 50 was only 0.11 faster than what he went out in the hundred in
