Minnesota post-grad Ashley Steenvoorden turned up big with the first individual event win at this year’s Chesapeake Swim Club Elite Pro-Am in Oklahoma City, earning herself a $600 cash prize in the process.

Steenvoorden won the women’s 1000 free in 9:42.28. Though there’s a big field of pro swimmers at the meet, Steenvoorden was the only one in this race, though she wasn’t the only ‘elite’ here. USA Swimming Open Water Junior National Team swimmer Brooke Lorentzen took 2nd in 9:45.10, and her 16-year old Mission Viejo teammate Amanda Barnes was 3rd in 1:07.52. Both Mission Viejo swimmers were lifetime bests in the race.

Presuming Steenvoorden continues her career until 2014, she and Lorentzen will be some-times training partners at Minnesota.

In the men’s 1000 free, with no pros around to claim the money, Mission Viejo 16-year old Nicholas Norman was an 8:57.68 to win the men’s 1000 free. That makes Norman just the 9th 16-year old to break 9 minutes in this race in the history of USA Swimming.

Antonio Ramirez took 2nd in 9:20.19, followed by Nicholas Brown in 9:23.32.

Full meet results, including those from the 200 medley and 800 free relays, are available for free on Meet Mobile.

Very good 8.57.68 for Nicholas Norman. He’s now the 4th performer of all-time in the 15/16 years old ranks. The NAG record is still held by Jeff Kostoff in 8.49.97 since 1982! It’s time to break it! We have seen a Mary T. Meagher record broken so why not that one? I think 15-year-old Matthew Hirschberger is the best placed to break it in the next months. He has swum 9.02.37 last March at 14!

Off topic but it would be good if you could make a little article about Duel in the Pool at least 1 or 2 hours before the start of the meet with the start lists. We could then make some predictions.

start lists for tonight…ledecky in the 400 free, I would love to see that world record go down. Simone manuel in the 100, I think she is going to have an excellent meet…she is the future of USA sprinting, very exciting.

Interesting that Dwyer isnt in the 100 free even though swimswam predicted him as a medalist…he is doing the distance events (400 IM/free). he is swimming fantastically under bowman, cant wait to see him and his training partner Agnel battle it out tonight.

I think itll be interesting to see Kathleen Baker too. She is arguably the top recruit next year (behind ledecky, and tied with Ella Eastin) and she… Read more »

Here in France nothing live on TV. Shameful! We have plenty of TV sports channels here and no Duel in the Pool tonight. With Agnel and Ledecky in the water! 😡
It will be a recorded broadcast on Monday. Same as in USA with NBC on Sunday.
But you will probably find some live streamings on the internet. Day 1 will air live on sky sports 2 at 7 PM in GB. It means 2 PM EST in USA and 8 PM for me in France.
