Chimrova Sets 100 Butterfly Record at Russian Short Course Champs

Svetlana Chimrova set a new Russian record in the women’s 100 butterfly at the Russian Short Course Championships which ran from November 8th-12th in Kazan.

Chimrova posted a time of 56.87 breaking her own national record of 57.03, which she set last year. Her time now has her almost a full second clear of the field in the world rankings.

She also took the gold in the 200 butterfly hitting the wall in a time of 2:08.24. 

Another one of the standouts on the women’s side was Daria K Ustinova who swept the backstroke events posting a 27.20 in the 50, a 57.77 in the 100 and a 2:03.28 in the 200. Her times in the 100 and 200 backstroke have her sitting in the second in the world rankings in both events.

Two Russian Junior records were set in the women’s events. Arina Openysheva set a new mark in the women’s 400 freestyle winning the event in a time of 4:03.08. Anastasia Kiripichnikova did the same in the 800 freestyle winning the event in a time of 8:20.17.

On the men’s side the two big winners were Nikita Konovalov and Oleg Kostin.

Konovalov took the 50 (22.59) and 100 butterfly (50.02) and the 100 backstroke (50.47). He now sits atop of the world rankings in all three events.

Kostin swept the men’s breaststroke events winning the 50 in a 26.36, the 100 in a 57.22 and the 200 in a 2:02.74. All three of his swims are now the top ranked times in the world.

Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Anton Chupkov finished second to Kostin in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, but broke the junior national records in both events. Chupkov posted a 57.61 in the 100 and a 2:03.57 in the 200.

Daniel Pakhomov and Roman Larin also set new junior national records. Pakhomov set a new mark in the 200 butterfly finishing in a time of 1:53.10 while Larin put up a time of 1:53.06 in the 200 backstroke.

Not too important, but Sjostrom swam 56.1 and Hansson 56.7 at the Swedish nationals.
