Chinese Nationals: Sun Yang’s 1500 Shows Endurance Is Suffering

The eighth day of the Chinese National Championships featured the women’s 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, and 400 IM, while the men competed in the 50 backstroke, 400 IM, and 1500 freestyle. Five different swimmers posted top times in the world this year, which is impressive after eight days of competition.

  • Xu Jiayu – 50 back 25.15 – 9th fastest in the world this year
  • Huang Chaosheng – 4:12.89 400 IM – 3rd fastest in the world this year
  • Yang Zhixian – 4:13.19 400 IM – 4th fastest in the world this year
  • Sun Yang – 15:00.73 1500 free – 5th fastest in the world this year
  • Ye Shiwen – 4:36.58 400 IM – 4th fastest in the world this year

The Chinese 400 IMers showed no signs of wearing down after 8 long days of racing. Huang Chaosheng and Yang Zhixian pushed each other through the 400 IM to the third and fourth fastest times in the world this year at 4:12.89 and 4:13.19, respectively.

Sun Yang did not appear to have as much left in the tank as the 400 IMers. It’s clear from this meet that his endurance is suffering, though his shorter races were decent still. He did post the fifth fastest time in the world this year, but many expected him to be faster than he was today at 15:00.73 after his strong 200 and 400 freestyles earlier in the week.

No PEDs = endurance suffering?

Perhaps, but going by what other posters on this site have said about his coach I’d think that was more likely the problem

Not sure if that swim is a testament to his fitness, but he’s going to have work to do with the young guns breathing down his neck.

No Wang Shun in the 400 IM?
The young Chen Xinyi has looked far off last year’s form… so far this season.

Wang Shun was in the 400 IM but finishing in 7th. Chen Xinyi entered a total of 9 events in this championship (50, 100, 200 free, 100, 200 fly, 100, 200 back, 200, 400 IM). Her 100 fly time is still decent.

While true, I have to believe he would have liked to put up a faster time than that.
