Chris Guiliano is a U.S. Olympian, and the first to come out of the University of Notre Dame. (ND alum Jilen Siroky made the team in 1996, but she was 14 years old at the time).
After a breakout summer where he was a surprise individual Worlds qualifier in the 100 free, Guiliano has only continued to improve. He matched his best time in the 100 free exactly at the Ohio State Invite (47.93) and went on to become the 3rd fastest performer in the yards version of this event at the ACC Championships (40.62).
But Guiliano had another surprise in store for the crowd in Indianapolis tonight. He was expected to vie for an individual spot in the 100 free, where he’s the #2 seed, or even the 50 (#10), but not the 200 free, where he was seeded way down at 29th on the psych sheets.
Swimming out of lane 1, Guiliano crushed his best time in the 200 free to take the second individual spot behind winner Luke Hobson. Guiliano now clocks in as the 11th fastest American performer of all-time; Hobson was already #4.
Coming into this meet, his best time stood at 1:48.75, set almost exactly a month ago at the Indy May Cup. It’s also worth noting that he only broke 1:50 for the first time at last year’s U.S. Open, the same meet where he made his first Worlds team. Over just 33 days, Guiliano figured out how to have a killer back-half. His final 50 tied with Brooks Curry as the 2nd fastest of the field, only behind Hobson.
Hobson and Guiliano will be joined by Drew Kibler and Kieran Smith on the 4×200 relay in Paris. Curry and Blake Pieroni may join them as well, provided the roster limit doesn’t come into play.
Guiliano’s success follows a wave of momentum out of Notre Dame, as the Fighting Irish recorded their highest NCAA team finish ever this past March.
Indiana represented in that final.
Do you think Caeleb will win an individual representative spot in the 100m freestyle?
I’m not sure about Jack Alexie yet, but Chris Juliano looks very good in the 100 meters.

Anyone remember during the semis when Rowdy said that Giuliano wasn’t gonna qualify for finals? Well here we are Rowdy
He makes too bold of assumptions. Great energy, but he thinks only favorites can win
USA Mens (and Women) 4×200 free are worse than I was expecting. But I think 4×100 free (Both) will be a lot better than I thought.
How so for the men’s side? Hobson/Foster/Guiliano/Smith is absolutely lethal.
GB’s p good
GB is only gonna win if they fire on all cylinders, these guys I have a feeling are gonna be consistent and well rested compared to some of GB’s legs
I was expecting Two 144 and two 145 and pulling way ahead of GBR. They are even matched.
On the other side, Women’s are ON FIRE in the 100’s.
What I was expecting for Australia, will happen in W 100free: At least 3 about 52.5 or lower.
Men’s 100 free will be mindblowing and a 4×100 WR is a great possibility.
Carson Foster would almost certainly be 1:44 here with his form.
I wouldn’t say absolutely lethal but that’s definitely a silver medal relay, especially after an underwhelming AUS trials

Except Guiliano qualified individually in the 200fr. Apple was only 5th at US trials in 2021.

.that comparison was not worth..Apple was not meant to be on that final relay and he never had 1.45 with him..Chris earned the moment not like apple
How do we know Foster will get the nod? He didn’t swim it individually. Will he do a time trial at camp or in Paris?
He swam a 1:43 relay split in Doha earlier this year. For further reference on his form he was a 4:13 in the 400IM at the same meet. The only reason he doesn’t swim the 200 free is because it usually conflicts with the 400IM.
Both US 4×200 will medal in Paris.

Uh were there three swimmers from Carmel, Indiana in this final? What are the odds of that? Does everyone in Indiana live in this one town?
Their fun fact of the week is that their 14 qualifiers are more than the number of stoplight-controlled intersections in Carmel.
That’s incredible! Did this fun fact come from the mayor or your interview prep for the mayor? There are a number of non-swimming elite athletes from Carmel; I had no idea it was such a small town!
It’s not a small town – just have roundabouts instead of stoplights. Population is over 100k. The high school enrollment is over 5k students.
Its a very rich nice suburb with a history of sports being prioritized.
Correction. Excellence is prioritized. Their schools’ arts programs and educational programs top notch.
No. But it’s not a coincidence that some of the best swimmers in the country had Chris Plumb as a coach.
