Christian Lorenz Decommits from Arizona, Gives Verbal to Arizona State

6’4″ breaststroker Christian Lorenz from Avon, Indiana, has decommitted from the University of Arizona today and instead decided to head to Arizona State for his college swimming instead.

Lorenz has yards bests of 56.1 and 2:06.64 in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.

“I really started thinking about the switch with Coach Eric Hansen taking a leave of absence, and I realized I simply felt more at home at ASU,” Lorenz told us today via email. “I loved the guys (at Arizona State), and the school in general. I have a family background there also, so being a Sun Devil was an easy choice!

Lorenz will have a bigger immediate impact on Arizona State than he would have Arizona last year, given that the Wildcats had the three best 100 breaststrokers in the conference, but Arizona State is by no means a derth of breaststroking talent. They graduated their #2 and #3 guys, but return this year Thibaut Capitaine, who was the conference’s third-best freshman with a 53.59 and 1:55.8 in the 100 and 200 yard races last year.

Lorenz is a Scottsdale, Arizona native and lived in Fountain Hills until he was four; his dad is an Arizona State alum; and his sister Sarah swam for the Sun Devils for a year in the 2011-2012 season, so the connections to Tempe are strong.

Lorenz is a very tall, very long breaststroker of the modern generation, who has been improving in a hurry, and a good pickup for the Sun Devils.
