The 2015 Tennessee State High School Swimming and Diving Championships began this morning and with the prelims done and gone a state record has already fallen.
MEN
200 Free
In the first individual event on the mens side Walker Higgins swam a 1:39.38 to take the top seed heading into finals over Hayden Burns. Burns, who recently committed to the University of Tennessee for next year, grabbed the second seed in 1:39.40, beating his seed time of 1:40.35. Third was freshman Trey Freeman in 1:39.42 to keep things close.

200 IM
Will Arthur took the top spot in the 200 IM this morning as Daniel Chang set up a very competitive final between the two with a 1:51.24 to Arthur’s 1:51.17. The two had similar seed times going into it, with Chang sitting at a 1:48.83 and Arthur a 1:49.00

Auburn commit and Baylor senior Christian Selby broke a state record in the 50 freestyle with his time of 20.41 to lead the way in the prelims. The time bettered former Baylor swimmer and current Alabama swimmer Luke Kaliszak’s time of 20.43 from last year.

100 Fly
The 100 fly featured three swimmers under the 50-second mark with James Bretscher putting up the fastest time of the heats with a 49.61. Caleb Harrington wasn’t far off with a 49.66 with Matthew Beach just getting under 50 with his 49.98. Going into the meet the three swimmers were the only ones with seed times under 50 seconds.

WOMEN
200 Free
On the women’s side Tatum Wade was the only swimmer under 1:50 this morning in the 200 freestyle, posting a 1:49.47 to take the top seed heading into finals. The junior also had the fastest seed going into the meet by over three seconds with a 1:46.90.

200 IM
The women’s 200 IM final tonight should be quite a showdown between the top two seeds. Susanna LaRochelle displayed one of the fastest backstroke splits this morning to contribute to her 2:04.30 performance that took the top spot. Behind her was Sophia Pilkinton in 2:04.84. Pilkinton was the fastest seed heading into the meet with her 2:01.42 with LaRochelle second in 2:03.79, however it seems as though LaRochelle is gearing up to challenge that order tonight in finals.

Jessica Wingo set herself up for a big win tonight, bettering her seed time by just about a quarter of a second to rock a 23.50 and give herself quite a large lead over the rest of the field. Her closest competitor was over four-tenths of a second behind her in 23.91.

100 Fly
Freshma Riley Gaines didn’t hold anything back this morning, taking almost a second off her seed time and rocking a 55.52 to top the heats. Gaines was well ahead of everyone as April Forsthoffer, who took the third seed in the 200 IM, as the closest to her, yet still far back in 56.35. No swimmer in the field other than fifth seed Kiara Norris has a seed time under 56 seconds, putting Gaines in a great position for tonight’s final.

That record was then broken by Mr. Chatham Dobbs at finals with a 20.28 to beat Selby’s 21.50.
