In addition to firing off a Polish national record as a member of the men’s 400m free relay team, Marcin Cieslak also nabbed an individual national standard at these Polish Winter Championships.
Racing on day 3 in Olsztyn, 28-year-old Cieslak crushed a lifetime best of 22.08 in the men’s 50m fly to take the gold.
After posting a solid effort of 22.99 to take the top seed out of the heats, former Florida Gator Cieslak unleashed the fastest 50m fly time of his career in 22.08. The mark easily cleared his previous PB and Polish national record of 22.53, a time he produced just last month as a member of the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League (ISL).
Flash forward to this weekend and Cieslak sizzled with his 22.08, knocking .45 off of that month-old record to qualify for next year’s European Short Course Championships in the event.
With his performance here, Cieslak now checks-in as the world’s 9th fastest performer of all-time in the 50m fly event.

Invincibility of Calicondor next year seemed to increase again ……
Wonder if someone will try to hire him away next year (he scored a lot for Cali but was still in the shadows of Dressel).
Doubt it. He’s a Florida guy
It’s going to come down to how this draft works, how many swimmers a team can protect, and how many rounds of drafts there are.
My opinions about the draft and what could make the league better (maybe not for the super stars):
Each team can protect up to 8 men and 8 women (half the roster), 5 rounds of Men and 5 rounds of Women plus 3 Men and 3 Women free agents (there are so many different ways of doing this, thinking of US professional sports drafts)?
If the League wants it to be a little more about the team, but it would affect the super stars a little, they would impose a maximum number of races each athlete can do per match/day (including relays and skins). Ex. 3/day or 6 for a match.
Maybe change the times a little for stealing… Read more »
I’d have to do the research, but unless you expect a big influx of ‘rookies’ who didn’t participate in the league last season, and if you subtract out those swimmers who will retire or just not race next season, I would suspect that there isn’t enough past the top 8 males and top 8 females on each team to dramatically close the parity gaps in the league.
Of course, this is the assumption that the purpose of the draft is to reduce the gaps in parity. Lots of GMs have remarked on what a brutal process the open recruitment is, how much time it takes up, so it’s possible the protect-and-‘draft’ idea is just to save the GMs time.

For the survival of the ISL, would it be a bad idea to limit how many events a swimmer can do?
I do fear that if a League is dominated to much a few athletes/teams (in other sports – a country) it leads to fewer prospective sponsors and interest from a view audience which could lead to fewer hours of broadcasting and money available. Thinking of some winter sports as an example as they have become more and more dominated by fewer athletes and countries.
Would like to see the sport of swimming grow and give more people a chance to make an everyday living as a swimmer, even if for only a few years.
I did a rough calculation. Top 8 men and top 8 women of Cali Condors contributed to about 80% of their total team score of this season. The ratio for Energy is about 70%.
I feel like Cali will try to keep him. He’s got a lot of speed and has shown to withstand a Dressel jackpotfest like in the 100 IM WR. Better to keep all those points in the family then let them go to another team
