Orion Vayanas, who hails from Hollywood, California, will swim for Cal State Bakersfield in the fall. Vayanas attended Palisades High School, a charter school in Los Angeles Unified that competes in the LA City section of CIF. At the 2019 Section Championships, Vayanas won the 200 IM (1:54.10), 100 breast (58.98), 200 medley relay (26.28 breaststroke split), and 400 free relay (48.04 freestyle split). That’s a big improvement from his junior-year results, where he was runner-up in the 200 IM (2:00.11) and sixth in the breaststroke (1:03.56).
Vayanas swims year-round for La Mirada Armada. He updated all his times, in both SCY and LCM, during senior year. He kicked off the year with new times in the 100/200 back and 200 breast at Kevin Perry in November and the 100 free at CA/NV Sectionals in December. Through the end of February, he had improved in the 500/1000/1650y free, 100y fly, 800/1500m free, and 100/200m fly. He went a best time in the 100 breast at Carlsbad Sectionals and in the 200 IM at CIF. Throughout the summer he dropped time in the 50/100/200/400m free, 200m back, 100/200m breast, 200m fly, and 200/400m IM.
Vayanas will be an asset to the Roadrunners in 2019-20. His 200 IM time would have ranked among the top-5 swims for CSUB in 2018-19. It took 58.00 in the 100 breast, 2:06.97 in the 200 breast, and 1:52.62 in the 200 IM to score at 2019 WAC Championships. Vayanas will join an IM training group led by current juniors Kristofer Rogic (200 IM A-finalist, 100/200 back A-finalist) and Alex Dragan (200 IM C-finalist and 100/200 breast C-finalist).
