CIF-SS D2’s Tenny Chong: Ready to take on fly and back next (video)

After proving himself as the top sprinter at the 2017 CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Championships in Riverside, Arcadia High School senior Tenny Chong is ready to expand his repertoire. Chong won the 50 free on Saturday with 20.22, a mere .05 off the division record of 20.17, set by Kyle Coan in 2014. It was his third consecutive D2 title in the splash-and-dash.

Chong then went on to swim a 44.67 to win the 100 free, just .08 off his prelims time of 44.59. The record he was going after there was a 44.11 that was swum by none other than 2016 Olympic champion Anthony Ervin in 1999. Chong also clocked a 19.70 to anchor Arcadia’s runner-up medley relay, and a 44.66 at the end of their 400 free relay.

Chong will swim at University of California, San Diego in the fall. He told Anne Lepesant he hopes to improve his fly and back (he won the 100 back at the 2016 D2 meet), and extend his range to the 200s. See the interview below:
